Double Yolkers!

July 23, 2006

Well it took our chooks forever to start laying but I am please to be able to report we are getting a steady stream of 4-5 eggs a day. Some of them are HUGE and quite a few of the huge ones have been double yolkers! Mmmmmmmmmm nothing better than twice the runny yolk on your toast for dinner! YUM!

I had a slight run in with Red (our rooster, who is white) yesterday thought. He is um.. how shall I put it, rather randy and very protective of his girls. He even ‘feeds’ them.. scratching around until he finds a particularly tasty bug then ‘book bok borking’ away to let one of the girls know it is especially for her. So when I came out the other night with the bucket of scraps for their dinner I guess he felt I was taking over his job and while I walked with the hens around my feet towards the chook house he got me from behind… both claws into the back of my shin!

Mostly it just scared me, then I scared him back and gave him a right shove with the lid of the scraps bucket. Mind you he wasn’t at all worried… but I freaked out poor nervous Henny Penny so much that she ran back under the house and I had to put everyone else to bed without. Took some coaxing with food and chasing around the yard before I finally caught her and got her in safe and sound for the night about an hour later!

Thankfully Red doesn’t seem to think the girls are a threat and happily hops into their lap to eat from their hands…. but I tell you what Randy Red the Rooster had better deliver some might fine chicks this spring/summer or he may well be our first go at eating home grown meat!

We had 25 chooks growing up and I still remember the mayhem when we’d yell “here chooks!” whilst clutching the scrap bucket! Glad you got out alive. ;) :)

Oh no!! Don’t let Leah read that or she won’t come play at your place again :) Glad you survived and the chooks are nice to the girls. And that double yolk egg sounds yum :)

Oh yay for the double yolkers :) I am petrified of roosters, we owned a poultry farm (egg layers) 25,000 chooks, half of them roosters that used to fly at you and attack you with their spurs….youch!
