A while back I posted asking everyone to suggest some ‘suitably cool and hip lullabies‘ and I got some really great ideas! So to save your children from hearing the same lullabies over and over I thought I’d share my new top ten groovy lullabies!
I have linked to you-tube videos of the songs where I could find them, some of them are a tad odd, but at least you can sample them and hear for yourself what I am yabbering on about!
Goodnight My Angel – Billy Joel
This is not so easy for a female voice to sing but it is a beautiful song with beautiful words.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World
This version combines both songs and is just way cool!
Dreamland – Art Garfunkle
A little bit hippy and whole lot of fun. I really really like this one! Excuse the odd video that goes along with this song on you-tube it was the only version I could find!
Stay Awake
The original version was by Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins but there are some new and groovy versions out there including one by Susan Vega and one by Harry Connick Jnr. The lyrics of this song just make me grin – perfect for my non-sleeper!
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Now before you think I am nuts for suggesting this as a hip and groovy lullaby, those of you in Australia are probably familiar with the ad for the new Bonds easy suits? You can download the version of Twinkle Twinkle from the ad at the Bonds web site (you will need to register as a member first) and it is rather cool!
The Long Day is Over – Nora Jones
A lot of people suggested Nora Jones – and she certainly is cool and soulful. I picked The Long Day is Over just cause the title sounded right!
Morningtown Ride
A tad daggy I know, especially this version by the seekers, but nice and easy to sing!
Moonshadow – Cat Stevens
Gone hippy again, but I really like this song. It’s easy to sing and the chorus is cool, even if the rest of the words are not entirely sleep inducing!
Baby Mine
I have to include my favourite lullaby on the list, even if I am a little over it. There are nice versions out there by Alison Kraus (the you-tube link is Alison Kraus and awwww cute widdle animals)) and Bette Midler as well as the Disney version.
Wiccan Lullaby
Kind of floaty and peaceful – I really like this version by Bette Midler
I’m still collecting so keep suggesting!

Just popping in to see what is happening in your neck of the world. Love this list of songs. Loved the adorable hair clips too. I didn’t know about the Etsy web site until recently. Very cool find. I was thinking it would be fun and spontaneous to send you an actual cd of our favorite children’s songs. Send me an email with a mailing address and I’ll burn one and pop that in the mail to you :-)

Oh Morning Town Ride was the lullaby my dad used to play on an LP for me at bedtime… wasted way to much time listening to it again last night. Great post Kate :)

I LOVE the new version of Twinkle Twinkle, actually WE love the new version! We sing it so much we’ve forgotten how the boring old version went!

DH always sings James Taylor’s “Rockaby sweet baby James” (only he switches in the name of the baby he’s singing to)
…and pretty much anything from the Beatles. Let it Be, Yesterday, etc…
Here’s a secret–it’s not about WHAT you sing, it’s about HOW you sing it!!! Sing it slow and mellow, and anything is a lullabye…trust me, ANYTHING. :-)
One of my FAVORITES is Kenny Loggins “Return to Pooh Corner” album…Rainbow connection, return to pooh corner, and “love is” are all awesome songs.
I also like Doobie Brothers “Winkyn Blinkyn and Nod” from the nursery rhyme. My daddy used to sing that to me. :-)

I landed here from Skittles’ Place, looking for Wordless Wednesday. Found this great list instead and wanted to say thanks. We are always on the look out for new lullabies. Our little man loves them.
