Questions…

Muski
I have some questions I need to ask someone… so who better than you guys huh??

What can I do with half a tub of cream cheese??
It is left over from making cream cheese frosting for carrot cake – because carrot cake is just not carrot cake without it. No one in our house likes it ‘as is’ so I am wondering if I can cook something else with it? And don’t say another carrot cake because four eggs and a cup of sugar and a hell of a lot of oil PLUS the cream cheese icing… I think once in a while is enough!

Bulk Food in Melbourne?

Does anyone have experience with buying food in bulk in Melbourne? I’d like to be able to buy things like flower and oats, bicarb, chick peas – that sort of stuff in big lots, preferably somewhere that I can bring our own containers and just fill them up. I haven’t had much luck finding anywhere in Melbourne that does that – suggestions anyone? And if you have done this (even if it isn’t in Melbourne) have you found that it is actually cheaper than buying these things at the supermarket?

If you could plant a fruit tree what would you plant?
We have space for a couple more trees in the orchard and it is getting to the end of the bare rooted season so we thought we might see if we could pick up a bargain at the local nursery – but what to get?

Hmm I thought there was something else I wanted to ask but now I can’t remember (story of my life) so I guess it is not important… Ok now go leave me a comment and answer all my burning questions. Please.

For bulk- if you have an ABN try Campbells Cash & Carry. Not sure if they do oats and they don’t let you take your own packaging but its definitely worth a look to get well anything you can think of in bulk.

I’m sure theres a few organic type grocers that do that too though, I just can’t think of where

For cream cheese I’d suggest pouring sweet chilli sauce on it and using it as a dip but since you don’t like it… muffins maybe?

Cream cheese makes some lovely spreads (try it on bagels or crackers, or mix it with coctail sauce and tiny shrimp and put THAT on crackers).
It also can be used to make center fillings for pastries, or strusel toppings on muffins.
Alternately, just ask me for my recipe for cream cheese frosting which does not involve so much oil and egg. :D

My favorite fruits are apples and peaches, so those are the trees I’d go for…I don’t know your climate or what works best in it though.

I’d plant an orange tree. It’s one of those lovely winter fruits that are perfectly created for the snotty season; full of vitamin C just when we need it! They look bright and cheerful in gloomy winter too! And they seem to have a long fruiting season …Oh AND…. I have a recipe for Orange muffins to use up any excess or squashed ones

What about some banana muffins?. We like cream cheese frosting on our banana muffins. Or you could mix some taco seasoning into it and make a dip, and eat it with corn chips….. oh yum that sounds really good. I might have to try that myself… hehehe!

As for your other questions sorry I can’t help you!

We love cream cheese and strawberry jam on toast or sandwiches in our house.

I would plant a pink lady apple, my favourite apple variety, or an apricot… or a nashi (cross between a pear and an apple) all these are growing well in our orchard.

The cream cheeese… spread it on toast.

There’s a really nice dip you can make by chopping some onion, red capsi and bacon and frying them till caramelised and then cooling that and zooming it up with some cream cheese. Crikey that’s nice and something I haven’t had in 10 years!!! Yummo!

Lemon trees are the most most important trees IMO. Lemonade variety. Ohhhhh yessssss.

I get my bulk stuff from the Organic Elements shop at the market. Good stuff, but I hear Organic Gertrude in Fairfield is cheaper.

Can’t help you with the cream cheese, but you must, must, MUST have a Moore Park apricot tree. Also, it’s not a tree, but a passionfruit vine is essential, I hope you have somewhere to put one! A quince tree is also something a bit different but stewed quinces are devine! :-)

I don’t have a recipe for your left over cream cheese, but some the ones already suggested sound delish!

Also don’t know about bulk food in Melbourne.

Oranges and apple trees! I love oranges and my Issy loves apples!

I have a question for you: Did you buy or make the shelving unit Muski is sitting in front of?? That is the kind of thing I want to tame the toys around here!
