What Can We Do Today?? – Build a Cubby!

September 16, 2008

Typical spring weather here of late – one day gorgeous and sunny and we can spend the whole day outside, the next wild, windy, cold and snowing on our mountain and we are stuck back inside again. To beat the borings we made a little cubby house yesterday…

Cubby House

It was nothing flash, just a sheet thrown over the back of a few chairs and secured with hair elastics. Throw in a few pillows and, in our case, the play oven and sink too because the princesses still need to eat don’t you know…and there you have the makings of an afternoon of fun.

If you are after something more permanent then maybe you could whip up this nifty over the dining room table cubby house. It looks so cool, but our table is oval shaped and has head bonking stuff under it so we will just enjoy the fun of rebuilding are semi permanent cubbies each time someone leans on the roof and they come crashing down.

When the weather is better I want to make an outside cubby house too, built in the same way, or maybe something a little more spectacular. I have very fond memories of using old lumps of wood and fallen tree branches to create forts and cubbies when I was a kid. We have plans for a permanent outside cubby house – well a cross between a stage and a house to full fill the princesses’ performing needs as well as the castle keeping desires. A full sized tepee would be ace, but thid growing bean teepee looks a bit more doable. I think we’ll have to try growing some of those this year.

So what are you waiting for… go make a cubby and get in and play!

Great idea Kate – the girls look like they are enjoying themselves.

My girls were cubbyhouse-ing yesterday, too, only they play Mummies, not princesses. :) It’s always the best thing to occupy time, and to restrict the shenanigans to one area. :)
