Plans and Decisions – Bathroom.

bathroomplan

This here is the plan for our new family bathroom…. except I am not happy with it.

I don’t like the current lay out, it just doesn’t seem to look right. I doesn’t feel like it will be functional. I don’t like that the toilet is in the middle of the room and that the shower is right inside the door. I know that I don’t want it like this… I just don’t know how I do want it.

Help!

There are some things about this bathroom that can not be changed. The window can not be moved (it is an existing original double hung sash window). The door can not be moved either (again an original door – this room is currently half the dining room). We have to have the toilet in the bathroom.

There are other things that we know we want. We (ok I) really want a BIG bath so need to leave space for that. We are not keen on an open ‘wet room’ kind of shower, being that this is the kids bathroom (among other reasons) so the shower will be a standard sizes square base with glass screen on 2-3 sides. We only want/need a single basin. We need storage, as much of it as we can get, as long as it is functional. We need wall space to hang at least four towels.

We’ve been told that it is not a good idea to have the shower screen butt right up against the bath… though I am not sold on that idea and think we could get around it. But bare in mind we are doing the majority of these renovations ourselves. So apart from the actual plumbing… we’ll be putting in the new studd walls, waterproofing and tiling the whole lot, and while we are pretty darn good at this, we are not professionals so we aren’t keen on tackling anything to fancy or expensive.

Surely all of you out there in blog land have stored in the back of your very huge brains your plans for the perfect family bathroom? Surely you’d just love to share them with me?

Heck… lets dream a little… despite the fact that it’ll drive me nuts hearing all your awesome ideas that we can’t afford.. lay them on me. What would your ultimate bathroom design be like, if money (and skill) was no object???

I don’t know about dreams (I mostly dream about kitchens and sewing rooms, LOL!) but I can tell you my thoughts on this bathroom…

Honestly the first thing that strikes me about the layout there is that when you open the door you’re looking straight at the tub…if your family is like mine, then people come and go while someone else is bathing, and that arrangement offers no privacy…
Does the door have to stay where it is? I assume it needs to be on taht wall, but can it be on the edge instead of the middle? Can the tub fit ‘behind’ the door? Then the toilet (sortof under the window), with the shower at the far end (next to window), and then counter/shelves coming up the other side? Obviously I have no idea if that’s a problem for the plumbing or whatnot, but that was the first thing that occured to me…

See, I was going to hide the toilet behind the door and ask if you had a problem with an enclosed shower over bath?

Funny isn’t it, the first thing that stood out to me was that if you were in the shower & someone opened the door it would be awful!!! lol
My thoughts….I would put the bath were the shower is, the toilet next to the bath in the corner & the shower opposite the toilet.
Good luck it isn’t easy.
We put the shower over the bath in our bathroom (we have an ensuite with seperate shower) and it works really well. Certainly opens up the room.

Hmm – I have no problem with the bath being where it is – but why not put the shower over the bath (you can get some fabulous shower curtains or glass screens that fold back), and then put the toilet behind the door where the shower is now.

is l. for linen cupboard?

can u slide the mystery L. across to the bath and have the toilet in the corner? I’d not want my loo next to the bath either in case someone does need it when someone is in there – it’s one thing to be jiggy with nudity and public toileting, quite another to have someone using it right next to you LOL It’d also mean the loo isn’t on display when the door is open, or if someone walks in on you – can easily kick it shut lol. The possie of the bath doesn’t bother me either.

The shower over the bath would certainly give you more space and putting the toilet where the shower is and changing the side that the door opens too so that it’s behind the door to give people a chance to shout out “I’m in here” when someone walks in on them would help……..

I have a friend whose shower is in the same spot near the door as your plan and she hates it. If anyone walks into the bathroom to go to the toilet while she’s in the shower anyone in the family room can see her (and it has happened)

I know you want a big bath, but have you considered a different shape? A corner one would allow you bath in one corner and shower in the other and free up a little more wall space for racks.

A little privy wall between the toilet and bath is a great idea.

We’re in the middle of our bathroom renos (have a look at my pix on FB). We have a cupboard where your shower is and then the shower is next to that, so the bathroom door opens against the the cupboard.

Hey hun we put in a corner bath (it’s a big’un!) and we have the shower over it and it saved us tons of room. We used to have a separate bath and shower but when we changed to the corner bath visually our room seemed so much bigger! And with a corner bath you could move the toilet over near the door then :) – well that’s my two cents worth anyway LOL

my answer may be repeated because I didn;t read through the other comments. How about a corner bath tub – they can be quite big and then you can put the shower next to it alla long the back wall. The toilet can be moved down a little to accomodate the tub or else move it to where the shower is now. The sink could stay and then you have all that room for storage cupboards and shelves. On that train of thought don’t forget how wonderful shelves are!! you can put towels on shelves, they look great rolled after they have been folded and stacked.

DO NOT PUT THE SHOWER IN THE BATH!I have been there, done that and ended up spending a lot of money to redo the bathroom. Just looking quickly, put the toilet behind the door (I can see there is not enough room for the shower there). Put the shower in the right far corner and the bath along side the left wall hard to the window. Then you have quite a lot of space for linen etc. I know you can’t move your door but you can hang the door the other way if it gives you more options.
Good luck with your renos!

ohh…so many suggestions. I personally don’t like a shower over bath system….to awkward for bathing little kids & for cleaning. One thing I would say is that put in a swivel spout for your bath so when you all get in (that’s the plan right?) no-one has the spout pointing into them, especially if the bath is deep. I prefer a bath under the window. Can the door perhaps be converted to a sliding door as it makes the bathroom feel so much bigger if you don’t have the door opening into it. That’s my 2 cents worth!

Is it too late to comments? I am thinking kids bathroom? Corner bath with a shower over (it will grow with them but not kill you for space). Place it away from the window in the bottom left corner. I would put the toilet behind the door (to increase privacy if anyone does feel it is OK to come in regardless of current use. Place it where the current shower is if you need it have that much room. Cover the other wall in a big built in shelf unit with a basin in the middle. The cheaper option may be a big wardrobe either side and double sink in the middle.. three kids using a bathroom.. 2 sinks may not be a bad idea! And you could def do with the storage space. I would buy white tiles.. throughout. Make every fixed thing white… then you can change it up with accessories. It will never date and will age well with the children. We have had a white bathroom before and it was heavenly and NO problem to clean despite being 10 years old when we moved in. Good luck!
