This was the view from my back door this afternoon. It might not look like much, but do you see… there… through the trees in the distance… yes.. there… There is supposed to be a mountain there. Actually there still is a mountain there, except you can’t see it because of the cloud and the mist and the RAIN!
Now normally I wouldn’t be quite so excited about rain. In fact I actually really don’t like the cold weather and just as I keep reading bloggers on the other side of the world wishing spring into their lives I dread the fact that also it means the end of our summer and the beginning of cold days and even colder nights. I am celebrating this cold wet weather though because we just haven’t had any rain (and I really mean NONE AT ALL) this year… and since last year wasn’t exactly a bumper year for rain, nor the year before that, or the year before that… well… things were getting a bit dicey on the water front.
We don’t have town water, we rely solely on rain water collected from our roof and stored in three ginormous tanks. We’ve had below average rainfall since we moved here and we’ve done pretty well being frugal with our water… but despite the short showers and the ‘letting it mellow’ things were beginning to look a little worrisome. Last week the Baldy Boy declared we had about six weeks of water left.
Six weeks before we’d be buying drinking water and washing in bore water… if we could get that to run through the house pump. We needed rain… bad, and for a change, it actually did rain!
It’s not been the huge downpour that we’d hoped for, but it’s been enough to settle the dust and make puddles on the ground. We’ve had about 4mms up until lunch time today, and I’m guessing maybe 2mms more after an afternoon of light but steady rain. It’s not much, we are still going to have to watch our water and we are still in need of that big down pour, but every drop I hear trickle down that drain pipe is a drop closer to a nice big hot bath!
