Garden Week Is Coming.

October 16, 2009

Another week has slipped by. I just knew October was going to be fast and furious, but I’m still wondering how it got to be the middle of the month already?

The weather has been totally crazy here. One moment sunny and nice, the next freezing, rainy and windy. The weather people say it is going to get better over the weekend and be gorgeous next week, and I hope they are right because I have so much to do in the garden.

I am declaring next week Garden Week here on Picklebums.

If someone had told me ten years ago that I’d be heavily into gardening I would have laughed in their face. Back then, it seemed like a whole lot of work for rewards that could easily be bought at the supermarket. It was something old people did to fill up all their spare time.

These days, and especially at this time of the year, gardening is bordering on a passion here. I laugh at myself quite a lot… the image of the old lady pottering in the garden doesn’t quite fit my style, but I am ridiculously proud of being able to feed my family food that we have grown. Food that I know is chemical free, tastes great and is cheap!

I am by no means a gardening guru. I am mostly a ‘stick in and see if it grows’ kind of gardener. I don’t know very much about gardening, I read things but my brain can’t seem to hold the information for long. I am not a perfect organic gardener, and while permaculture sounds fabulous, it is definitely in the ‘too hard’ basket for me right now. I just buy seeds, pop them in, see if they grow. I cross my fingers and google a lot if something goes wrong.

So I’m no expert, and I don’t really aspire to be one either, but is so good to grow things.

Surely I am not alone? Surely there are other ‘stick in and see’ gardeners out there who are just proud to get one tomato or a hand full of beans? If that is you, or even you are a fabulous permaculture gardener, or even if you just dream about it…. join in with me and blog something garden next week!

I’m going to tell you all what we are planting right now, and what’s growing right now. I’ll share some ideas and links and maybe even a recipe or two. Oh and photos, of course photos!

So everyone send nice weather vibes our way and join in with Garden Week!

Hi Kate,
Nice to see you at D2E.
i need a garden week here too, I have had a shocking week of trying to catch up on stuff, and procrastinating too much (not helpful) am slowly getting there.

I’m totally a “stick it in and see if it grows” kind of person. Hope it works for you!

My garden is about done for the winter. I look forward to watching your garden grow in place of it.

I’m a ‘stick it in and hope’ style of gardener as well. I want to be more, but just never seem to have the time.

our vegie garden still needs a lot of renovation after the fires, but the strawberries, rhubarb and asparagus are looking good, and we had another meal of silverbeet last night. I’m digging over the huge pile of horse poo we dumped at the beginning of winter (gotta love a front-end loader on a tractor!) which is making the soil soooo yummy. Then we will create some new beds and at least get some spuds in. And tomotoes go in Cup Weekend (according to Peter Cundall, lol). And we’ll find somewhere to stick some pumpkins too. Rain is good, though, right?
