Last Week Squiggle Mum blogged about Joy and it really struck a chord with me.
The notion that there I things that I do that don’t always make me deliriously happy but I can still do them ‘with joy.’
There are lots of things I need to do with ‘more joy’.
Bedtime.
Some times putting the kids to bed is lovely, but at the moment, more often than not, I am so tired I just want them all in bed asleep so I can do that too. That seems to suck a lot of joy out of bedtime, and I need to fix that.
Dinner.
A big part of me is very proud that I cook for my family. I cook good food, often from scratch and I spend time thinking, learning and working on ways to do it better. But deciding what is for dinner every night, juggling what we have in the cupboards with shift work and school lunch needs and arrgh… sometimes I feel so resentful that it all falls to me. Need to find the joy again!
Outside.
It’s winter. It’s cold and sometimes wet, and muddy and miserable…. but not always. Maybe a new, warm fleece jacket would help me find the outside Joy.
And then there are these other things, like laundry and dark mornings and making phone calls. I am not sure I will ever find much joy in those- but even a little bit here and there would help… focus on the positive, because there is something good about everything.
In other news…
I’m off to meet up with some other Melbourne Mum Bloggers tomorrow morning at Birdy Num Nums in Carlton. Check out the details over at Planning With Kids and come along!

Its often hard to find joy in the every day things.isn’t it??
I think being aware can help a lot.
hugs
I’m so glad something I shared resonated with you Kate. I agree with you too… especially dinner times I find hard to be joyful about! I grumble about what to cook, grumble about cooking it, grumble about the mess the kids make… hmmm. Think I need to try a little harder in that department!!
I can very much relate to this at the moment Kate!
Oh, I get the cooking thing too! And then when someone grumbles about a dinner that you have put so much effort into (last week it was Cottage Pie)!!!
Tonight, potato and leek soup. Princess’ favourite, and good for Kinder nights when she doesn’t want to eat a “long” dinner LOL
And can’t wait until tomorrow either. Hopefully the meds will kick in and I will get a good night of sleep. Thinking we might sit up together and watch Glee, then snuggle in bed together for an early night (early for me anyway!).
I hear you, and you’re right! Sometimes we just HAVE to muster the energy – and it will brighten your day too.
Yes! There is always something good in everything! Thanks for the reminder, Kate.XO
PS. Have fun at the meet-up. Don’t forget the piccies. Upload them on AMB, k?!
Looking forward to chatting very soon!
Great reminder about the need for a positive attitude.
You’re right Kate, our attitude to those every-day tasks can make a big difference.
Joy in the little things, yes. I need to find that too.
Kate, this echoes a lot how I feel at the same times… especially bedtime. At that time of day I just WANT THE KIDS TO GO TO BED!!! Ahem… but often it’s the time when the children need to talk and cuddle. Seeing Joy in everything is something I really try and do.
I think your girls are full of spunk.
