When your sisters have gone to do something special without you, there needs to be some sort of fabulousness at home to even the score. On this occasion fabulousness for a three and a half year old was painting, but not just any kind of painting…. magic painting!
Stuff we used..
An old wax candle or white crayon.
A large sheet of paper (the bigger the better for little people)
Small, hard to tip containers of watered down food dye or other non-toxic dye or liquid water colours.
Cotton buds or small brushes (or big ones but cotton buds drip less and so make less mess).
What we did…
Draw on the paper with the candle.
Muski was quite convinced I was insane in the beginning.
“But you can’t see white on white paper, it doesn’t work” he insisted and ditched the candle in favour of my black marker for a little while.
“You can’t see it now… but when you paint, it appears like magic” I insisted.
He was sceptical but he humoured me.
Then we began painting. A bit of colour here, mixing some yellow and blue over there. And then he saw it…
“Look! Look! it is magic!”
And then there was more crayon drawing and more painting and lots of fun!

Brilliant idea, especially the cotton buds part.
I was just thinking of doing this the other day and then thinking I didn’t have any white crayons. I didn’t even think of a candle – doh! Secret messages and pictures are so exciting.
I’ll have to try this one! I’ve tried it when he was 2, but Cutie Pie didn’t like it, but maybe he’d like it now! Thanks for the reminder about this activity!

I remember doing this when I was younger, my brothers and I would play Spy games and write secret notes that the others had to decode hehe :-D So much fun, I will definitely be having a go at this with my girls too! I love the look of concentration on your little boys face.

I’ve used white crayon and watercolour paints with the kids but I’ve never thought to use a candle – brilliant idea! Can’t wait to try it!

Another way to do secret drawings or messages, is to write with lemon juice on any kind of paper using cotton buds or small brushes. It disappears when it drys – especially when you write on yellow paper. And then….when you iron over it and the message appears! MAGIC! :o)
