Fake it till you Make it

October 11, 2012

Help!

My blog doesn’t have a niche!

I don’t even know how you say that word out loud… ‘neeeeeche’? or ‘nitch’?

I don’t have an ‘elevator pitch’.

How do I sum up my blog in one neat little sentence, that sound professional, down to earth and quaintly amusing?

I haven’t built and email list and I have no clear idea of where my blog is heading… or why!

I don’t even know what to say when someone asks me what I do!

“I’m a stay at home mum… a blogger… a freelance writer… a preschool teacher… a web designer… um…”

Heck I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up, let alone what I want to be now… a few short months away from forty.

My blog is like my life; garbled, mixed up, and rambley. Yet here I am, nearly seven years since I started blogging and about to stand up among a list of other fabulous Australian Bloggers as a Nuffnang Talent Blogger.

I feel inadequate, nervous, out of my depth, unsure, and thankful.

And tonight as I stand beside some of the bloggers I most admire I am going to do what I always do in these situations….

I’m going to pretend my blog has a niche, and that I am cool as a cucumber (er… pickle). I’m going to be brave and try to be proud of what I do without being a jerk.

I am going to take a deep breathe and….

Fake it till I make it‘.

And while I am busy ‘faking it’ you can pop over and check out the other ‘real’ bloggers who are also among the Nuffnang Talent bloggers…

Are you a ‘fake it til you make it’-er?
Do you know the secret of how to be proud, and not seem like a jerk?
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Do you know how to say ‘niche’?

I don’t have a nitch either…I’m very new and haven’t a clue. It’s so refreshing to read an experienced blogger still has those issues. Well done on the nuffnang gig.

Oh No – does 40 count as grown up? I have 12 days to figure out what I want to do with my life!
For what it’s worth, I pronounce it neesh and I love your blog. Your parenting tips (with an Early Childhood education slant) are really helpful and often inspiring.

No way… 40 is definitely NOT grown up! I still want to be a tight-rope walker… I think.

And thank you :)

I’m still not sure what I want to do when I grow up. I’m doing this in the meantime though, has been pretty fun so far!

We love you and your blog Kate and are completely thrilled to have you as part of the Talent Program. Looking forward to seeing you tonight.

Cheers!

HA! Love this article! We are doing the same thing over on our site! Come and visit us too! Thanks for making me smile. :) Oh…and I say, “nitch.” Not sure if that’s correct or not either, but I feel silly saying “neeech.”

I am starting to wonder if ‘neech’ is the way Aussies (and maybe Brits too?) say it and ‘nitch’ the way Americans say it?

Fabulous and congratulations Kate! I must say you fake it very well!! I use to worry about a niche but now i just go with what i want to write about with the loose theme of parenting! Why box yourself in with a niche…you are much too interesting and i love your varied content personally!!

Who cares? I don’t have a niche either, but then, I also don’t care if I have a following, so I guess I don’t need a niche!!

I pronounce ‘niche’ like ‘quiche’!

Yes! That’s how I say it too! :)
(and you do so too have a niche… you totally have the gardening/sustainable living/urban homestead niche covered!)

This post made me smile because it is exactly how I feel about my blog. But you are obviously doing something right because we all keep coming back to your blog for more.

Congratulations! You should be proud and own it!

I wonder if there’s a planetary alignment that causes introspection or something because yours is the fourth or fifth blog I’ve read lately that wonders aloud “what am I doing?” Naturally, I am now asking myself the same question!

Congratulations and good luck Kate. I always enjoy your blog. I only hope I do half as good a job at a niche-less blog!

Kate,

I really enjoy Picklebums, I have subscribed to so many blogs and I just never seem to get the time to read them. Yours is the only blog that I read regularly. I love your down to earth, funny, and honest writing and I love the random variety. Who needs a niche?

It’s much deserved, Kate. Well done!!
I’m in much the same boat as you right now – wondering what my neeeche is! The other pronounciation reminds me of nits! ;)
Being involved in BAM has made me question what I’m doing and my “purpose”. Everyone else seems so focused on what their goal is.
I’ve always thought of you and your blog as being “earthy”. The food, the craft, the printables, the colour scheme… everything! When I visit your blog, it feels like coming home… x

Hey Kate!
You know I think you and your blog are fabulous! And at 42, I still don’t consider myself a grown-up! I have also just accepted that being a writer is OK :-) You are an inspiration! Thank you!
