*warning: this post may contain traces of swear words
He said it with that little waiver in the middle of the world that lets me know he is about to something profound…. or terrible.
“Mum… is poop a swear word?”
I hid my goofy grin and wondered where this conversation would go.
“Well, not really, it’s just another word for poo, and everyone poos. But I guess it depends how you use it.”
“Like if I said Zoe was a poop head, then it would be a swear word… right?”
“Yes” I said “Plus it’s not ok to call people names.”
He thought for another moment, head cocked to one side, then he did it again…
“Mu-um… is ‘horrible’ is a swear word?”
“Horrible?… no horrible just means not nice.”
“But what if I called Zoe ‘horrible’, then it would be a swear word.”
“No… that’s just mean” I said.
“So how do I know what is a swear word?” He asked, all serious like.
“Well… a swear word is something that is rude, or that other people may think is rude. It’s a word that might offend someone if you said, even if you didn’t say it about them. It’s a word that is just not nice for people to hear.”
There… I’d summed up swear words to my five year old without actually having to say any, I was rather impressed with my parenting prowess.
“Oooh… like bugger.” He said
“Yes, like bugger”
He thought for a bit longer and said,
“Like bugger and crap”
I was pleased that those were the only swear words he could think up, then he said…
“Like bugger, and crap and shit… and Fu@kin’ Fu@ker Fu@khead.”
I hid my face in my hands and all I could manage was.. “yes my beautiful angel faced innocent five year boy… all of those words are swear words.”
“Thanks Mum” he said.. and trotted off.
