Organise? Renovate? Contemplate?

Organise ’08?

That is the exact opposite of our life right now. Instead being all nicely scheduled and organges we are leaping wildly from one commitment to another, trying to cram in all the stuff we need to get done. It’s not horrible, actually it is often quite enjoyable, but it is tiring and I’d be a fraud if I tried to spout on about attempting to be more organised at the moment. I’m holding fast to my lists and not even bothering to try to manage anything else… and yes the laundry is well out of control.

Renovate ’08?

Well that has come to a grinding halt too. We are waiting on architects plans before we can move forward. Even the Baldy Boy’s new shed (which we had hoped would be well finished by now) is way behind schedule because of paper work taking forever. Thankfully we’ve done this sort of thing a few times before and we know that even the best laid plans often don’t come to fruition and schedules get thrown out the window at the drop of a hat, so we are all good. I’ve reassed my time frame and adjusted my thinking to include a winter with only half a house and I think we’ll manage. ‘As long as it happens eventually it’s all good’ is my mantra and repeating that over and over is what my renovations plans consist of right now.

So now all I am left to write about is ‘Contemplate’…. This is what we are doing a lot of right now. Sorting out potential schedules for next year. Seeing if we can fit in everything everyone wants to do without any clashes. Dreaming about a long hot summer and weeks where we don’t have to be anywhere or work to anyone else’s time table, a nice lazy way to ease into the new year. Idly day dreaming about what things I’d like to do once the crazy christmas rush is over – a blog re-design for me, and maybe take on a few new blog design jobs for others, reading (real books as well as blogs), sewing, making a scarecrow, thinking about what I might like to blog about next year.

2009 the year of….. ?

Washing Line ’09? Nah I can see my blog stats dropping at the mere thought of me blogging about how dismal I am at laundry each week.

Sunshine ’09?? Might be good for the summer but once the cooler weather comes back I’d just spend each pining for that sun.

Hmm… maybe I should just leave the idea of a Monday blogging subject all together? But I do so like to have something to inspire me to start off the blogging week. Suggestions anyone?

Organise ’08 – diaries calendars and planners…

It seems that November is the time of year for all the new diaries and calendars to come out. I am suddenly over run with calendar ace-ness and wondering what I might get to try and keep us on track for next year.

For the past two years we’ve used a kikki k family calendar which I really quite like, but it’s not perfect. For a start the birthday column is wasted as we rarely write any birthdays in it, and while I love that it has a column for each member of the family, so often one event involves more than one of us and I am yet to find a way to get The Baldy Boy to read more than just what is written under his name! Plus this year’s grey borders are a tad boring… I’d like my calendar to be just a little bit funky!

I came across a link to this lovely diary – Milestone Press’s The Master Plan – The designer diary for parents. It looks to be set out really well, it has lots of the things I’d like to have on a calendar/diary – especially the dinner bit, but it’s a diary. I am not good with diaries. They tend to sit in the bottom of my bag unwritten in until I find myself making a dentist appointment and I still have no idea what days are ok for who. I think I really need something that goes up on the wall, for everyone to see.

Maybe I’ll try the Weekly Planner Pad from Kikki-k. But then it only shows a week, I am not sure that is enough to keep us organised. I am not a fan of the timed slots for each day either and no spot of meals, but I could just pop that on the side I guess. It is cheap enough to try and not to be a huge waste of money if it is a disaster I guess… and I am not sure I can find a better option…

What I really need is something big that I can stick up on the wall. That has big spaces to write in multiple events for each day. I like the idea of a weekly planner with a space for menu planning, but it also needs to have a little calendar for the rest of the month, and maybe the month after too. I don’t need a special space for birthdays, nor timed slots in each day. It needs to be functional, but also a little bit groovy.

Yeah I know… I am picky… I want a lot from my calendar, heck I’ll only be truly happy when the thing screams at me to remember the milk as I run out the door. You know, if I had a wide format printer I’d just design my own – now that would be fun… but I can’t see it working on a little a4 sized sheet.

Anyone got any nifty links to great family planners you’d care to share?

Organise ’08 – Clothes Storage Dilema

I think it’s safe to assume that if I couldn’t manage to get to the bottom of the laundry basket when life was reasonably sane, then there is little chance that it is going to happen now, mid November when life is totally mental. But (are you really not supposed to start a sentence with ‘but’ because it feels so right sometimes) you know… there is always that glimmer of hope. That wild crazy dream that for a moment.. however fleeting that moment may be, that just for one moment there might not be any dirty washing in my house. I am not sure why I continue to bash my head against the brick wall and strive for this washing nirvana, but I do. I have a feeling that if I ever actually achieved it, seeing the bottom of the laundry basket, that it may be such a momentous occasion that I’d have a heart attack and drop dead on the spot… but hey at least I’d die with no dirty washing in my house!

Arrghh… I think the craziness of this coming week is getting to me already, I am sounding like some housework obsessed crazy woman, when in reality, it’s a good day in this house when everyone has a pair of clean undies to wear… and heck this is not at all what I wanted to write about… how on earth did I get so side tracked?

Ah yes… washing… I’ve been doing some today. Taking advantage of the sunshine and the fact that I won’t need to go pick up the Twinadoes until 4pm (all good vibes to incredibly wonderful kinder mum who invited my girls to play!) I’ve attempted to wash a big back log of clothes and put them away and while I was taking washing off the line, folding and sorting as I went (cause I was being a good house wife today) I came across a clothes storage dilemma and I need some help.

The girls share a bed room, they share a wardrobe and storage unit and more and more often they share clothes. In the past I’ve kept their clothes separate to make it easier to grab and run in the mornings but these days I have little to no say over what they wear and I can never pick who is going to go for which t-shirt. So now I am thinking (yes dangerous I know)… it would make my life easier to stop trying to sort t-shirts and undies in a Zoe pile and an Izzy pile… so maybe I could just chuck them all in together?

I know… really stupid, crazy, ‘who cares’ kind of question…. but seriously… before I go spending hours rearranging things and finding that it doesn’t work and having to spend more hours putting it all back… surely someone out there has some advice for me?

Someone with twins? Or someone with kids who share a room and share clothes????

Is this going to make life easier or harder? Chuck it all in together or keep separating?

I know… I ask the most life altering, important questions don’t I!!??? LOL

Organise ’08 – End of Year Check List

I am attempting to stem the backwards slide in the organisation stakes and trying hard to keep on top of the coming weeks of craziness and stay even a little organised right through until Christmas.

I started out vowing that I would be organised early for Christmas this year and yeah, ok…. I know that just saying that I will be organised isn’t going to make it magically happen, which is a bit of a bugger really, but in my defence there has been a few new end of year things added to my plate AND I am much more organised than I was last year when life was a lot less crazy. So I am patting myself on the back already, regardless. A little bit of self encouragement never hurts!

So now the plan is to try to keep my head above water and be organised for all of the end of year things we have planned. Lets see what is on my end of year check list and how on earth am I going to manage it all!?!

The Twinadoes’ Birthday
Eeek it is November already and my girls turn five (yes FIVE!) in less than two weeks! I finally got the invitations out to kinder friends today and will whip off some emails and sms’s to those further away as well. We are trying to keep it simple, with just cake and a play in the park, so please everyone pray that it doesn’t rain here at the end of next week! I also have to make cakes to take to kinder the day before, and I have a meeting to attend for their new kinder that week as well! I think I will be glad when next week is over!

Ballet
On the off chance you haven’t been paying attention to this blog of late, then you might not realise that the girls will be in a whiz bang fancy ballet concert at the start of December. Two dances, two performances and a heck of a lot of extra rehearsals! I am VERY thankful that we don’t have to sew costumes (they are hired) but we still need to get the correct tights (x2) and manage hair and make up (my girls hate their hair put in a pony tail, so making two buns that will last from 8am till 6pm isn’t going to be easy) and juggle Muski.

End of Year at Kinder
The end of year at kinder means a concert at kinder, as well as a party. I am trying to come up with a cool present to give their teachers, but so far I am drawing a total blank. The end of the year also means that we will have orientation at their new kinder for next year, I am hopeful that will magically fit in around ballet rehearsals and current kinder commitments!

Camping Holiday!
We were hoping to be a bit more organised for our holiday than we currently are, but hey, at least we have the tent! The only other big purchase we have to make is a sleeping mat for the Baldy Boy and I – I have found what I want, just waiting on BB to go check them out too. Still not sure what Muski will sleep on though! I feel like there is a thousand little things to organise for the trip, but not sure what they are. I must make a list and try to wrap my head around it all.

and finally… Christmas.
It is not all bad news, I am doing ok in some areas of Christmas planning, even if I am doing really bad bad bad in others.

I have managed to order all of the ‘bought presents’ either online or via the toy library’s fund-raising catalogues. I picked up our order from Eco Toys while the lovely Mel (owner of Eco Toys) was at the local market yesterday and ooooh they are even better in person than they look on the web site! I am hoping all three kids might pick up some money for Christmas/birthday as there are a number of other things I’d love to get from Eco Toys, Mel who runs the site is just lovely and I highly recommend her products and her service, so go have a look. We pick up the toy library orders next weekend, which includes a few things we need to make a start on our ‘made presents’… and here is where my master plan has come undone.

By now I had hoped to have at least made a start, or even completed a few of our crafty presents, but um.. ahem… er… well… ok I confess I have done nothing more than think about what we will do. I have all the plans in place, I’ve researched where we will get the supplies from, I’ve even got a few of the supplies, but as yet we’ve not begun anything. I really, REALLY, need to rectify this, especially since we will celebrate christmas with family at least a week early this year… so I have a week less time… help!!!

Am I the only one staring down the barrel of psycho end of year stuff in the coming weeks? Surely someone else’s life is more mental than mine, and surely they cope just fine…. please, if that is you, come tell me how to do it!

Organise ’08 – Holiday Plans

We’re all going on a summer holiday…. sing it with me people!!!

tent

Yes, that’s right, we are busy making plans and organising a tenting holiday. We are so excited to be able to sneak away and spend time together as a family, but even more excited that we will be doing it with some of our closest friends. We’re meeting the traitors who moved to Queensland half way, up on the NSW north coast for a week of Christmas camping and we can’t wait! So not only are we trying to organised birthdays (the Baldy Boys is this week and the Twindoes at the start of November) and Christmas but also our holiday…. can we all say ‘crazy busy’ seven times really fast???

We managed to grab a bargain tent off ebay as our old one just wasn’t going to squeeze in an extra person (we haven’t been camping since Muski arrived), and we figure as the small people grow it was only going to get squeezier.. so we are now the proud owners of a nice big ’18 man’ tent. We pitched it in the backyard when the Baldy Boy bought it home and I am not sure how you’d squeeze 18 men and all their stuff in the tent, but it is plenty big enough for us.

We have a bit of camping gear as we’ve camped on and off… well more off than on since we had kids, so some of it needs and update, and since there is now more of us, we need more of it. So on our list of holiday things to organise we’ve now checked off the first big item – place to sleep? check! We’ve also managed to grab a new camp stove on sale, a car dvd player with two screens (also on sale but we’d have paid full price for the silence it creates in the back of the car) and super Nanny found a replacement kiddy camp chair for the one we broke… but oh the list is still rather long!

We need to sort out what everyone will sleep on. We have two self inflating camp mattresses which the girls have claimed as their own. Last time we camped (on the drive up to Queensland, when I was pregnant with Muski) The Badly Boy and I slept on one of those inflatable mattresses, nice and big but not very comfy. It leaked a tiny bit, not enough to have you sink into the cold hard ground but enough to make me catapult out of bed every time the Baldy Boy rolled over. I have two requests while camping – keep me warm and give me a good nights sleep and I can cope with anything… So I am on the look out for a decent, thickish, comfy camp mattress. Suggestions people?

And that is just the beginning. We still need to sort out food, cooking equipment and some kind of table(s). I need to sort through summer clothes and figure out how to pack a little but enough. We need to figure out how to entertain three small children on the long drive – the DVD player and lots of drawing should work for the big girls but Muski is a whole other kettle of wriggling whiny fish.

So hit me with ‘em! Come on people… I have about nine weeks and not heaps of disposable income to get organised for a family camping trip, I need your best suggestions, advice and help!
