Following on with our recent theme of deep and meaningful questions from our resident four year olds… Today we were having a chat while we ate lunch (last nights left over chile and tortillas turned into nachos of sorts) about food and friends, which may seem an odd combination of topics but we are having friends to play tomorrow who are Vegan and everyone (including me) is trying to get their heads around who can eat what.
Zoe – “T can’t eat cheese can she?”
Me – “No T doesn’t eat cheese, or milk”
Izzy – “or meat’
Me – “That’s right”
Izzy – “She’s a plant eater, like a stegosaurus”
Me – “Well you know how Uncle M is a vegetarian because he doesn’t eat meat (Insert lots of nodding)… Well T doesn’t eat meat, or milk, or cheese, or eggs – and you call that ‘Vegan’ ”
Izzy “Oh vEEEEEgan, not like a T-rex, they are meat eaters”
Me – “No not like a t-rex”
Zoe – “so what kind of dinosaur is vEEEEEgan??”
ummm… umm… err…
Then I had a brain wave – a way to answer all these tough questions! I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before…
What kind of dinosaur is vegan??
Me – “you’ll have to ask your kinder teacher, she knows all about dinosaurs” (snigger snigger, that will have her earning her money!)
Now that we’ve wrapped our heads around what it means to be vegan we are going to cook these Banana Oatmeal Cookies from the Simple Cooking blog so we have something yummy that we can all share tomorrow.
Oh and just so you all know… Izzy did remark at the end of our conversation – “It’s ok… we still Love T, even though she is vEEEEEgan” I am so glad I didn’t raise children who are ‘foodist’.
