We have one more week of school left before two weeks of term break. In the warmer months I’d just send the kids outside in the morning and tell them to come back when they were hungry, but the weather isn’t really conducive to lots of outside time at the moment so I am getting together a list of things to do during these wintery holidays…
Things to do during an at home winter holiday.
Make a Lego balloon car.
Have a movie night sleep over with a friend
Make Bath Fizzies
Read, read, read!
Make honey comb
Play some card games. UNO is a favourite but we might try this maths game for the girls
Paint, glue and draw.
Try our hand at finger knitting
Make potions outside if it’s not raining.
Explore with masking tape and newspaper.
Play jenga
Glow sticks in the bath
Play dough, play dough and more play dough
Make our own Moon Sand.

My boys set up their own zoo and aquarium (one in each bedroom). They use all their soft toys for the animals, set up the enclosures around the room (working out what environment each animal would live in), draw a map to give to visitors, make signs for visitor hours and feeding times, and give out monopoly money for the visitors to be able to spend at the zoo. Then they market their zoos (begging us to come and visit), and the zoo is ready for visitors! We pay our money, get a ticket and a map and wander around the zoo. Yesterday I got to feed a lion a play drumstick, feed a panda some bamboo (that Josh had made out of green felt), hold a koala and pat a lizard! I was then told I had to take photos of everything!!!
I was actually amazed at how much thought went into this activity – it had them occupied for ages, and really showed how much they had learnt about different animals. Oh and Sam even made me go to his gift shop at the end of my visit!

We love to bake up a storm. Cupcakes, cookies etc, then we go on a picnic to the local park :)

We have recently revisited, and enjoyed, balloon tennis. The broom is laid on the floor as the ‘net’, girls have a tennis racquet each and I’m on the side lines as umpire, coach, score keeper and they usually love my ongoing funny commentry to the game. As the balloon floats they are demonstrating some interesting tennis skills on getting to it and how to whack it back with much force to the other. The only issue we’ve had is our small dog standing on the ‘court’ and getting in the way!

I can’t wait for a pyjama day – cosy, warm, DVD’s, blankets, sleeping bags, conversations, and lots of cuddles!

Cooking – my 3 year old loves helping in the kitchen. Well really I think she likes the tasting more than the actual cooking :)

My daughter absolutely love play dough. She is 7 years old and makes (read: design) the most amazing things. Plates with food, animals, flowers … and sometimes I think by myself … where did she get that artistic streak from because I can’t make something recognisable at all.

Holiday activities around here. Building indoor cubbies with blankets. (Unfortunately the two year old thought the roof looked like a hammock and crashed everything when he tried to sleep on the top.) The sand pit is always a hit, favourite activities at the moment include sifting sand, spray painting sand with food dye and squirty bottles (unfortunately the dog got squirted too, it took a week before he didn’t look like he’d been attacked by an axe by the two year old who had squirted him with red dye.) and digging for dinosaurs. Cooking is always fun, can’t beat filling hungry tummies. Science experiments are a big hit with my 5 year old and he also evicted the two year old for a day so he could do lego without being interrupted. Holidays are fun!

Cooking with the kids is the best, just ignore the mess and enjoy!
