DIY Train Track Scenery

Posted on August 11, 2015 2 Comments

My eight year old has taken to browsing my pinterest boards looking for cool things to do!

One Sunday afternoon he came across these very cool train tracks from Pepeto and his eyes lit up!
“Can we make these for our train tracks?” he asked enthusiastically.

We didn’t have enough felt, or enough foam board, but inspired by the idea I came up with another way to make scenery for our train tracks and incorporating my big boy’s favourite past time, drawing!

Make your own train track scenery!

DIY Train Track Scenery.

With just paper, markers, scissors and double sided tape, we made our own creative landscapes and scenery to add to the side of our wooden train tracks.

For the big boy I just gave him a general idea of how big his drawings could be and still fit on the tracks, but for the smaller boy (aged 5) I cut out small pieces of paper for him to use so his creations didn’t get too enormous! Then I just let them draw!

We drew all kinds of crazy things to add to our train tracks – houses, city buildings, trees, flowers, roads, fences, mountains, volcanoes, fairy houses and more!

We even made a simple tunnel/bridge by drawing on a long strip of paper and looping it over the tracks.

The boy’s writing skills also got a work out with various signs, most of them saying “Stop” or “Warning!”

After we cut them out I attached all the drawings to the tracks with double sided tape, but I think even a basic glue stick would work well for this project.

We made sure our drawings didn’t over lap the ends of the pieces of track so we are easily able to take the tracks apart and rearrange them.

The boys and I were thrilled with how well our DIY train track scenery worked out. Such a fun activity for everyone!

I personally like the homemade scenery better than any store-bought version! *This* is what our train set has been missing!
