I bought a dress…

Posted on June 16, 2009 17 Comments

OK so I bought a dress, you know, for that huge family wedding that we have coming up in less than three weeks! eeek!

dress

It’s black, just below the knee in length with a cross over v-neck, and well, yep… it is almost as boring in real life as it looks in that terrible photo. It does have some trim at the neck and at each side at the bottom are these little pleated bits with more trim. So it’s not totally boring… but still boring.

I’m going to need to buy a black bra (no I don’t already own one… ) and some kind of coat so I don’t freeze to death (no I don’t own one of those either unless you count polar fleece or denim). Any suggestions on a coat style that will work well over a dress and still be wearable with jeans later on?

And hello, side boobs? Yep.. I’m taking you to the wedding too, aren’t you lucky!

This dress does nothing for my side boobs… in fact I think it might even make them look more noticeable! Though I am still hoping and praying that the universe shall provide me with something suitably fabulous to hide the side boobs with. I’d settle for a nice cardigan that wasn’t ‘long-line’ and and in any colour other than ‘drab’… but that is proving a tad more difficult than I first thought. I’d go for some kind of fancy wrap or shawl too, if I could find something appropriate and figure out a way of keeping it on while dealing with three small children.

I have seen these rather cool shoes in either pinks or blue/greens however, and they are cheap too! With kind of an Indian feel, they have embroidery and beads, and would look fab teamed with some kind of wrap from Ishka or similar. Can I wear slip on shoes with stockings though? I know open toe shoes and stockings are a tad on the daggy side but what about showing your stockinged heel out the back?

And on that note do I wear black stockings or skin colour?

I am a fashion nightmare aren’t I? Help me oh fashion gurus of the internet.

Oh, I like that dress (which might just reflect my boring sense of style, rofl)! I reckon high black boots, and a little bollero style cardigan in blue – Tree of life has some nice little jackets, too, but that depends on what you might want to spend to hide the side boobs, yk?

I think something retro would look great over a black dress… Otherwise a square of your favourite material with a head hole in the middle, worn with the corners front/back/either side… And you can cut a flattering neck line into it if you’re feeling handy.

Actually, I think I have some patterns somewhere for a shawl/wrap that is super easy to make and wears really well. Will have a hunt and let you know if I find it.

The great thing about a black dress is you can accessorise with just about anything. As for tights – it depends on what shoes you’re wearing. The boots idea is a great one. I’m a boots girl in winter definitely.

Nice dress! I’d skip the stockings and maybe go some capris or pants underneath and flat shoes. I think I’m even more boring – not sure if my solution even makes it a “dress” anymore LOL

I suggest a colourful scarf around your waist to dress it up and skin (not mine) coloured stockings for daytime wedding.

The dress is a great cut – well done! I’d go with a warm shawl or pashmina, secured in place with a big vintage brooch for a bit of bling.

I think a Pashmina or something similar, or a boero jacket if you think you need more weight.

Also, when you go bra shopping tell them you need to eliminate side boobs – if you get the right bra they should just vanish :)) Fingers crossed anyway

I agree about the correct bra, I would take the dress with you, take a deep breath and put yourself in the hands of the ladies at a lingerie shop… the right bra will make heaps of difference. For the record, I love the dress, not boring at all!

Long time lurker, first time commenter here – but I thought I’d put in my two-cents worth.

I’m definitely with the ladies who say the right bra will eliminate the side boobs. As embarrassing as it is, those bra shop ladies do know their stuff!

And I’d go with skin coloured stockings with bright accessories (that’s the beauty of a black dress). Good luck!

You think you’re a fashion nightmare? I thought your dress was nice, classic even. Put on a red coat and some “big” jewelery and you’re all set.

No suggestion on the side boob issue though.

Great dress! Nice cut and very versatile – you could dress it up or down. I am with the pashmina vote. The pashmina can comfortabley stay slung around your shoulders all night – you don’t have to spend a fotune on them either. Get one in a bright colour you think looks nice on you like a shade of blue or green and accesorise the rest. Beautiful!

Buy yourself a trench coat. It will look great with the dress and with jeans. Also, do not go with black stockings. Skin colored ones are so much better, especially with that dress.

Ok, because I am also shocking at fashion stuff, I asked Miss F for her ‘expert’ opinion and here is what she says:
“Black lace stockings are a very classy addition to black dresses. Not fish nets though, LACE. And don’t mix pastels with black – brighter is better, ok?… Oh mum – she’s NOT wearing those gumboots with that dress, is she? That would be a bad choice – Like a 20 hour time out bad choice!”

    Good luck!
