I don’t like making school lunches. I mean really, really, don’t like making school lunches, but the bothersome task is made a little bit more bearable when I combine it with doing something special for my kids.
Over the years, my kids have all loved getting lunch box notes. When they were little they wanted a special note in their lunch box every single day. And even now that I have older kids, even if they hid them from their friends, a note in their lunch now and then to tell them how proud I am of them, or remind them how awesome they are, is well worth the effort.
Sometimes my lunch box notes are hurriedly scribbled on a scrap of paper, but I try to have a stash of fun, printed lunch box notes on hand.
These free printable lunchbox notes for kids are perfect for a little message, a joke, or even a funny drawing, to slip into the lunch box.

Keep it Simple for Beginners.
When your kids have just started school, keep the lunch box notes really, really, simple. Use pictures and simple sentences that they are already familiar with like “I love you” and “Have fun!”. For preschoolers simple drawings of hearts and happy faces, with their name and ‘love Mum’ will make them feel special.
Make a Joke
If you are stumped for something to write, send a joke! Your kids will love a funny joke that they can share with friends, and these super fun school jokes are kid-friendly, safe for school, and perfect to put on a lunchbox note.
Write a Positive Note
When your kids are a bit bigger and are reading more confidently, you can write a longer note. This is a great opportunity to tell them something you love about them, or something they have done that makes me proud of thankful.
Count It Down.
Lunchbox notes are a fun way to count down to a big event! “Only 167 more sleeps till your birthday!” is always a hit!
Get Creative.
Draw a picture! You don’t need to be a wonderful artist, the funnier looking the better I’ve found. Check out this mum’s amazing lunch box notes that she drew onto napkins! Obviously she is a talented artists, but I love that her kids bought them home to keep! If you aren’t into drawing perhaps try writing a poem. A limerick about your child would be super fun!
