Go insane or make play dough?

July 24, 2007

Yesterday, to save myself from a repeat of this… they told me they were ‘camping’…

And to save the girls from impending doom if we had to go through the packing up trauma of that yet again, we made this….

Easy as pie – actually easier than pie! Done in the microwave!

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 tbsp cream of tar tar
1 tbsp oil
1 cup water.

Cook in microwave on high for five minutes, stop and stir halfway through. Allow to cool, knead with a bit of extra flour and there you have it! We added paint to ours to get the bright colours as we didn’t have any food colouring.

It turns out very much like the really good long lasting cooked dough you do on the stove but was MUCH much easier.. no stirring till your arm breaks and watching so it doesn’t burn. It only makes a small amount, so perfect to make two batches so everyone could have the colour they wanted and get to stir etc. It did make a mess of the containers we did it in… lots of rock hard dough stuck to the sides which needed hours of soaking to get off, but they are fine now. Remains to be seen how it keeps but it was so quick and easy to make it wouldn’t matter much if we had to make some every week.

Mind you.. it didn’t save any of us from the incredibly destructive mess and following packing up arguments… it just added a new dimension of play dough mixed in with every single toy they own being thrown on to the floor.
