I needed an activity that the 8 year olds and the five year old could do together. Something easy, but fun. Something that could be simple for small fingers but could also be more details for older hands.
Trawling pinterest I came across this idea for making paper rockets at Curious Kangaroos and knew I had hit gold!
To make it manageable for the five year old I created a printable template for him to colour and cut out. Everyone helped come up with the designs for the rockets, then we printed them and set to work colouring and making them our own, ready to assemble.
To make our printable paper rockets you’ll need:
My printable blow rocket template, or some paper.
Something to colour or decorate with.
Some glue
A pencil
Some tape
Bendy straws!
You can download the pdf printable paper rocket template here.
Now just print out the blow rocket template, colour in and cut around each rectangle.
Using a pencil, roll your rectangle around it and glue along the long edge to make a tube.
Flatten the top of your rocket and tape it closed.
Then pop your rocket over your straw and …5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blow!

I actually taped across the long edge instead of gluing because I didn’t plan ahead and leave a “gluing tab” and I didn’t want to cover any of my boys’ (or my own) colouring in effort.
My three year old son is going to love this!
I’ve just spent sometime with my 5 year old making a bunch of these rockets and he has given them 5 thumbs out of 5 for fun!! :D
I printed out one pagefor him to colour in himself and then cut and paste the doc into a graphics program and coloured one page in electronically myself – it was a fun activity and I am going to take the idea into my sons daycare/kindy to recommend as a fun activity to do :D Thanks for sharing it!
