We discovered this gorgeous crystal painting activity by accident when our attempt to grow Epsom salt crystals was a failure, but this fun painting activity was a great success!
How to do Crystal Painting
Materials
- Thick paper – black paper gives great results
- Epsom salts
- Liquid watercolours (or food coloring)
- Warm water
- Paint brushes
- Somewhere to lay paintings flat to dry
Crystallising Paint Recipe
- 1 tbsp Epsom salts
- 1 tbsp warm water
- 1 tbsp liquid watercolors
- extra water
Mix the Epsom salts with the warm water and stir until most of the Epsom salts are dissolved. Add liquid watercolors and a little extra water and mix well.

Instructions
Once you have made your crystallising paint you need to use it fairly quickly, so grab some paper and start painting.
A light brushing of crystal paint will grow a small amount of crystals, but if you want lots of crystals you need add lots of paint!
Find somewhere flat to dry your crystal paintings. Some small crystals should begin to appear after 2-4 hours, but you’ll get bigger crystals if you leave the paintings to dry overnight!
Make sure to wash your brushes well after use. If you use glass containers for your crystallising paint you can leave any leftovers in the jars and grow some more crystals!
Sometimes, failure is beautiful.
