Easy Autumn Leaf Mosaic Collage for Toddlers and Preschoolers
The first version of this easy Autumn art activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. It is an easy, open-ended, process art activity that little ones will love!
To make this simple Autumn leaf mosaic collage you’ll need:
- paper or light cardboard
- leaves
- scissors
- glue
If you are doing this art activity with a young child who likes to use lots of glue, it’s best to use some light cardboard for the base. The side of a cereal box works really well for this, or some coloured cardstock.
You can use a regular glue stick, or try making some homemade cornflour paste and adding a little PVA/wood glue to give it some extra sticking power.
If you are working with toddlers you will want to pre-cut the leaves and keep the pieces quite large. If you are working with a preschooler they will love to help cut the leaves up into mosaic sized pieces, and it’s a great bonus fine motor activity too!
You don’t need to cut the leaves into perfect symmetrical shapes, random pieces work just fine. You can sort them into different containers according to colours like we did, or just make a big container full of coloured leaf pieces ready to glue!
Once you have all your leaf pieces cut they are ready to be glued onto the paper in any design you like.
The kids can glue the leaf pieces on to make patterns or pictures, or they can just fill the paper with the beautifully coloured pieces of autumn leaves.
This is a process art activity so there are no right or wrong ways to do it. The focus for this activity is on exploring the medium of the autumn leaves and using them creatively in any way you like
Autumn Leaf Mosaic Craft for Kids
If your kids are a little older and they are ready to add another step to this creative process, this leaf mosaic is another fun way to do this autumn art activity.
You’ll need all the same supplies as above, but you’ll also need a pencil.
Pick a large leaf from your collection, place it in the middle of your paper and trace around it. Now you have a leaf shape in the middle of your paper that you can fill with mosaic pieces.
Use the pieces of cut up leaves to fill in the leaf you’ve traced on the paper.
You may need to cut smaller leaf mosaic pieces, and even cut some individual pieces to fit inside your outline of the leaf.
When you are done you’ll have gorgeous mosaic autumn leaf art to display!
