Build a droid! Free Star Wars party printable

When I was planning a Star Wars party for my youngest child, I was looking for a quieter activity to have in between the more wild nerf gun and light saber fights! This build a droid craft activity was a great option and I was a little surprised at how long the kids worked on their droids, even with the lure of a lightsaber fight as the next activity!

This droid craft is easy to prepare ahead of time and easy to set up on the day so it makes a great Star Wars party activity, or just a fun activity to do to celebrate Star Wars Da on May 4th!

Build a Droid Craft for Kids

To set up this droid craft activity you’ll need a few basic supplies:

  • Build a droid printables (see below to download)
  • Light cardstock
  • Printer paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Markers or coloured pencils.

Print the droid templates onto some cardstock so they are a bit more sturdy, and print the buttons and shapes onto regular printer paper.

Because we had some younger children at our Star Wars party I cut out all the buttons and shapes and popped them into a tray in the middle of the table. Older kids could cut out their own buttons etc from the printable, or even use coloured paper to cut out their own designs.

We used glue sticks to keep things mostly mess free, and markers to add extra colours and designs.

Make sure you have some spare copies of both the droids and buttons in case you need extras on the day!

Invite the kids to chose a droid and glue on various collage pieces, adding extra details with the markers.

The kids at our party spent lots of time working on their droids and there were so many great designs. The kids were all really proud to take them home at the end of the party.

More Star Wars Party Ideas

We had a Star Wars themed birthday party for Eight 5-8 year olds, and we set it up as a Jedi training school. It was loads of fun, and really easy to organise thanks to lots of awesome activity ideas and some great Star Wars party printable.

My Jedi training assistant and I had the padawan run through these ‘training exercises’:

  • Follow Master Yoda instructions
We played ‘Yoda says’, which is like Simon says but with Yoda speak.
  • Complete blaster training
We set up some cardboard tube nerf targets like these and had them practice shooting.
  • Destroy the Death Star
I drew a giant Death Star and stuck it up on the wall. The kids had to shoot a paint dipped nerf bullet at it, blindfolded, similar to pin the tail on the donkey.
  • Build a droid
We used the droid printables to make droids.
  • Save Han Solo from the carbonite.
Inspired by this cool idea from Fun a Day, I laminated photos of Han Solo and froze them in a baking soda mixture for the kids to ‘melt’ with vinegar.
  • Complete lightsaber training.
The kids had to see how long they could keep a balloon in the air using their lightsabers.

We’d love to see your droids!

    3. We are having an outdoor Star Wars party this weekend, but the forecast is calling for rain. I am scrambling for some dry activities and this will be perfect to do under the pavilion! Thanks so much for sharing!

    4. This is awesome! I’m a children’s librarian in Southern California. Would we be able to use your droid printables for our Star Wars Reads Day event? It’s free, open to everyone, and celebrates Star Wars and reading!

    5. Our Cub Scouts are going to be building your droids during our Star Wars themed Blue and Gold party this month. Since most of our activities are catered for energetic boys, it’s nice to have an activity for those kids needing a less physical activity. These are so cool! I’m sure you’ll have lots of new visitors to your blog once I share it with the moms!!

    8. Hello, I am having my daughters party next weekend, she is turning 5 and wants it to be a Star Wars party and this is one of the activities we will be doing there, it will be perfect for that age group!! THANK YOU! Also, is there any way for you, if its easy, to have more colors available for the droid print outs?? My daughter really wants to do a pink BB8 haha. Would love to add like pink and green options for more variety to choose from!

      1. Unfortunately I’m not able to make changes to the printable at this time, but adding different colour options is a great idea and I’ll add it to my to do list. For your daughters party you could cut out the shapes from coloured paper and adding stickers or sequins would make great buttons too.
