If you are planning a Star Wars Party or celebrating May 4th, this build a droid activity and free printable will be a hit with all ages!
We had a Star Wars themed birthday party for my youngest on the weekend. Eight 5-8 year olds came over for some Jedi training!
It was loads of fun, and really easy to organise thanks to lots of awesome activity ideas and some great Star Wars party printable.
My Jedi training assistant and I had the padawan run through a series of training exercises.
They had to:
We played ‘Yoda says’, which is like Simon says but with Yoda speak.
We set up some cardboard tube nerf targets like these and had them practice shooting.
I drew a giant Death Star and stuck it up on the wall. The kids had to shoot a paint dipped nerf bullet at it, blindfolded, ala pin the tail on the donkey.
The kids designed and decorated their own R2 or BB droids.
Inspired by this cool idea from Fun a Day, I laminated photos of Han Solo and froze them in a baking soda mixture for the kids to ‘melt’ with vinegar.
The kids decorated pool noodle lightsabers with permanent markers, stickers and tape.
The kids had to see how long they could keep a balloon in the air using their lightsabers.
Apart from the lightsabers which were a huge hit, the activity the kids seemed to really enjoy was the build a droid project.
Build a Droid
I was able to do all the prep for this activity ahead of time, so it was a nice break for me too!
To make the droids, I created a basic outline and printed them on some card. We made an R2 droid and a BB droid. Then I created some basic shapes for the buttons and designs on each type of droid, and printed several copies on regular paper. We cut these pieces out ahead of time to save time on the day, and also had some spares for the kids to cut out.
Then I just gathered all the printables, some glue sticks, scissors and markers and we were ready to go.
The kids each chose a droid and glued on various collage pieces, adding extra details with the markers. They spent lots of time working on their droids and there were so many great designs. The kids were all really proud to take them home at the end of the party.

It seemed like you threw a great star wars party!
Greetings from Suriname , South America.
We are having an outdoor Star Wars party this weekend, but the forecast is calling for rain. I am scrambling for some dry activities and this will be perfect to do under the pavilion! Thanks so much for sharing!
Crossing my fingers for good weather for you!
This is awesome! I’m a children’s librarian in Southern California. Would we be able to use your droid printables for our Star Wars Reads Day event? It’s free, open to everyone, and celebrates Star Wars and reading!
Hi Courtney. If you send me an email to [email protected] I can give you more details about the terms of use for our printables.
These are amazing… thank you so much for sharing!
Our Cub Scouts are going to be building your droids during our Star Wars themed Blue and Gold party this month. Since most of our activities are catered for energetic boys, it’s nice to have an activity for those kids needing a less physical activity. These are so cool! I’m sure you’ll have lots of new visitors to your blog once I share it with the moms!!
Hi Kate,
When I click to download your droid printable, only the bb-s one downloads. Are the others available elsewhere? Thanks for your help
Each printable is an individual pf file, you need to click the individual link for each one. You might have just missed the link hiding between the photos :)
Oh my goodness! I am sorry! I see it now, of course. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so very much for making these droid pages. It was a hit at my sons birthday party. He wants me to print out more today for him to decorate!
Thank you so much, it is a huge help for me and for one of our student who loves Star Wars.
Hello, I am having my daughters party next weekend, she is turning 5 and wants it to be a Star Wars party and this is one of the activities we will be doing there, it will be perfect for that age group!! THANK YOU! Also, is there any way for you, if its easy, to have more colors available for the droid print outs?? My daughter really wants to do a pink BB8 haha. Would love to add like pink and green options for more variety to choose from!
Unfortunately I’m not able to make changes to the printable at this time, but adding different colour options is a great idea and I’ll add it to my to do list. For your daughters party you could cut out the shapes from coloured paper and adding stickers or sequins would make great buttons too.
