Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding

“I don’t want a birthday cake” my just turned six year old declared.

“I want a birthday pudding!”

So that’s what he got- chocolate self-saucing pudding with candles!

Chocolate self-saucing pudding - a warm gooey chocolate cake with magic chocolate sauce baked right into it!

It was a bit of a strange request, but I can’t say I blame the birthday boy.

There is nothing better than warm, gooey, chocolatey cake, with even warmer, chocolate sauce, and a scoop of ice cream to top it off!

This old fashioned chocolate self-saucing pudding is the perfect birthday treat. It’s quick and easy to make, and it bakes while you eat dinner.

My kids think this recipe is magical.

You start with the cake batter in the bottom of your dish, then you pour on the dry sugar and coco mix, and then you gently gently pour boiling water over it all.

How to make chocolate self-saucing pudding

It doesn’t look like it’s going to turn out any good when you put it all together. It looks like you forgot to mix things properly and put all the ingredients in upside down, and to be honest, it looks kinda gross! But after 30 minutes in the oven it magically turns into cake on top with hot chocolate sauce hiding underneath.

  6. Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and mix until everything is well combined.

  8. In a small bowl combine the cocoa and the sugar for the sauce. Mix with a whisk or a fork to break up any lumps.
  9. Pour the cocoa and sugar mixture gently over the top of the cake mixture, making sure to cover the whole surface with a nice thick layer.
  10. Carefully pour the boiling water very gently over the whole mixture.
  11. Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes. You want the top of the pudding to my firm and spongy when you touch it, the sauce will be hiding underneath.
  12. Serve hot with cream or ice cream.

    1. This is so gorgeous Kate. With hubby home (no work for 8 weeks = no money coming in ?), I grabbed out the faithful blue CWA book and made this with custard. Kids loved it and have wanted it each week since. I change it up a bit by adding mashed banana or grated apple – makes it even more moist and cuts the amount of butter needed.
