Under The Sea Mermaid Play Dough

If your kids love mermaids they will love this fun mermaid play dough invitation to play and printable mermaid playdough mat.

There is just something magical about mermaids. My kids have always been fascinated by them, partly because of their gorgeous tails, but mostly because they can live underwater. It’s an enticing thought, to be able to swim like a fish, live freely underwater, but still be a person. If only we could all turn into mermaids!

Your kids might not be able to turn into real mermaids, but they can make some!

This simple mermaid play dough activity is easy to set up and is perfect for lots of imaginative, creative, fine motor and sensory play.

That’s one of the best things about playing with play dough, it offers lots of opportunities for learning and practicing skills across all areas of learning and development.

It’s also a great way to extend a sea or beach themed learning project or interest.

Mermaid Play Dough Invitation to Play

Setting up this mermaid themed invitation to play was quick and easy.

We used our microwave playdough recipe and added some glitter to some of the dough to make it extra shimmery.

You could also make some sand dough which would be a fun addition to this playdough set up.

I collected some loose parts and accessories to add to our mermaids. You can use whatever you find at home, no need to buy anything fancy.

We use a plastic , multi compartment, party platter that you can buy cheaply at the supermarket, to store all our loose parts for playdough activities.

This is what we used for our mermaid play dough activity:

shells
glass gems
marbles (that look like bubbles!)
beads
large sequins (these make great fish scales)
cut up straws
wool (for extra flowing hair)

You could also use:

small stones
grass (for seaweed)
sea glass
pipe cleaners
driftwood
leaves
bottle tops
toothpicks
buttons

Free Printable Mermaid Play Dough Mat

Because we love mermaids so much I created this free printable mermaid playdough mat for everyone to enjoy. It matched our ocean themed playdough set in the shop, but is fun to play with on it’s own too.
