When my youngest child was a toddler he developed a sudden and intense fear of monsters. We didn’t know where this sudden and intense fear had come from, and nothing we did seemed to make it any better. Reassuring him that monsters were not real had no effect, and all the books we found about children overcoming their fear of monsters were too old for him, so I decided to make some monsters puppets so he could work through his fears through play.

These five bright, colourful, silly, friendly looking monster puppets were a huge hit with my toddlers, as were the funny monster counting songs we sang together.

We let my toddler play with the monster puppets for a long time. He’d often pick them up and give them voices, or even build houses from them out of blocks. And while these cute little puppets were not a magic cure to his fear of monsters (time and maturity helped a lot!) being able to ‘play out’ his fears in a safe way for him really helped.

Make Your Own Monster Puppets

These fun monster puppets and the silly monster counting songs are now a hit will all the preschoolers I know, and they are so easy to make!

All you need to make this monster puppet craft is the printable template (download below), some craft sticks and some tape.

Print the monster puppets onto some cardstock and cut out each one. Or you could use regular printer paper and laminate the puppets after you have cut them out. Tape a craft stick to the back of each monster and you are ready to sing some monster songs, use them for story telling, or for imaginative play!

I enlisted the help of the big kids. Big brother drew a fun backdrop for the puppet play, and the big sisters came up with a story that showed the monsters being funny and doing normal every day, not scary, things. The big kids put on a silly ‘monster puppet show’ for their little brother.

Sing a Monster Counting Song.

These little monster puppets are perfect for singing along and acting out a fun counting song!

If you know the song ‘Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed’ you’ll recognise this fun monster song!

Five Little Monsters Jumping on the Bed.

Five little monsters jumping on my bed.
One fell off and bumped his head!
I called to Mama and Mama said,
“No more monsters jumping on the bed!”

Four little monsters jumping on my bed…
Three little monsters jumping on my bed…
Two little monsters jumping on my bed…

One little monster jumping on my bed.
He fell off and bumped his head!
I called to Mama and Mama said,
“That’s what you get for jumping on the bed!”

We also love this cute little monster poem.

Five Little Monsters

This little monster has a big red nose
This little monster has bright green toes.
This little monster plays all night.
This little monster is such a fright.
And this little monster says
“Tee-hee-hee”
“I’m not scary, I’m just silly me.”

    1. These are great! I really hope that they keep working for your son. We’ve been quite fortunate so far with no big fears, except our middle son was scared of the washing machine when he was little! All resolved by getting him to help me do the washing! Thanks for sharing your printables.

    2. These are terrific! Thanks for the headsup about the PDF I wouldn’t have known and wouldn’t have been able to print. My daughter happened to see them straight away – very eye catching to a preschooler and ‘demanded’ some straight away! I’ll be sharing…

    3. Tgese are awsomre, we are having some nightmares so have made a dream monster to scare away bad dreams! these ,atch perfectly thanks

    4. These are fantastic! I also have a little boy who scares easily (hates anything in a costume that obstructs view of the head/face, so you can imagine what a challenge Halloween is for us). I haven’t been able to find any friendly monsters – till now. Thanks so much for sharing these!

    5. Thanks so much for posting these. These are way awesome! I love the Monsters jumping on the bed idea. So many ideas are running through my head of how to use these. Thanks for the inspiration!

    6. Thank you so much for posting these for print/download. These little guys are too cute! I’m so happy your son was able to conquer his monster fear, it sounds like he has a lot of fun with them now!

    7. I LOVE these! I am 67 and a multimedia artisit, and I plan to string these up in my studio! They make me smile with delight! thank you!
