This Week

This week we went from glorious warm sunny weather to freezing cold, wet and miserable.

This week - a quick run down of happenings on the Pickle Farm with the added bonus of some cool links

I struggle with the wild changes of weather that happen here at this time of the year. One minute I am out planting beans with my small boy in the sunshine and eating icy-poles on the deck, the next I am scraping mud off my boots and wondering if the feeling will ever return to my frozen fingers.

I am blaming the weather for a week of grumpiness. A coughing disease has crept from one child to the next, making them just sick enough to be cranky. I am so behind on the washing despite paying Izzy to fold and put away four baskets full. And something has eaten three of my four pumpkin seedlings. It has been kinda miserable inside and out here this week.

And as I sit her whingeing about the weather, the bush fires still burn in New South Whales. I caught some images on TV the other night and it so heartbreaking to see the devastation. The bank of low grey rain clouds that cover the top of the mountain suddenly seem beautiful as I know that soon enough we will be packing out escape box, checking our fire plan, and worrying about our mountain burning.

Here are some slightly less miserable things to inspire you this week :

What’s been happening in your part of the world this week??

  1. The weather is doing crazy things here too! One day we were warned off extreme fire danger and packed ready to go… the next it was sooo cold!! The fires really are scary aren’t they, it’s going to be a long Summer.

  2. The fires are really terrible aren’t they, and so early. It does make the summer stretching ahead seem a little more ominous.

Here the weather has been the same – the Spring up and down – but the almost constant is the Spring winds, which bring the sneezing and itchy eyes, which is the one thing I don’t like about Spring.

We’ve hardly got anything planted yet, and I am very aware that Melbourne Cup day approaches, which is when we assume the frost risk has passed here in Canberra. I need to get moving, but life – and work – is so busy right now it is hard to imagine finding time. Yesterday we & the kids between us were invited to 4 birthday parties (we didn’t make them all) and my 11yo’s footy presentation/dinner! It’s fun, but a bit full on for me!

  3. Sorry to hear about your terrible week..hope next week is better and warmer! We have have been having summer weather for awhile up here in QLD…have already ventured to the beach a few times for swims..but we could really use some rain!
