The photo above might not look like much to you, but to me it is full of potential… Potential walls!
This ‘build your own house’ gig is a lesson in patience for me. It takes a long time to double the size of your house when you are doing pretty much all of it yourself, while trying to hold down a full time job and look after four kids.
It’s also a lesson about choices.
We could have chosen to mortgage ourselves beyond our means and pay someone to do a lot of the work, but we choose not to.
We could have chosen to spend every spare second of our lives working on the house, but we choose not to.
We choose not to sacrifice our financial stability, our health, and our family life to have a ‘perfect house’ in a specified period of time. In a way this has taught me what I already knew; there is so much more to life than where you live or what your house looks like.
Sure, it will be awesome when it’s done, but awesome because we did it ourselves, our way, and with luck we’ll still be married at the end of it!
So, I’m trying hard not to be too disappointed that our kitchen won’t be done in time for Christmas, or new years, or my birthday. Instead I am focussing on the positives. I now have more time to make dream big dreams and mull over big decisions. And despite the fact that I’ve not yet decided on tiles for our bathroom floor (which might actually be done by Christmas!) today I am dreaming about the master bedroom.
Our master bedroom has french doors that open out onto our own little corner of garden… Ok, at the moment it is more mud hole than garden, but one day it will be garden. We also have small a walk in robe, which is a huge step up considering we have had no wardrobe at all for the last 6 years. Apart from those two elements the bedroom is pretty much a blank slate…
What colour would you paint your bedroom?
Do you dream of a king sized bed like I do?
TV or no TV?
Do I dare dream of a spa or hot tub in our little private garden??
What would you put in your dream bedroom?
Would you be totally practical or amazingly indulgent?
Share your ideas!

Ok wow – the hot tub would be awesome! I would absolutely get a King however that’s because my kids are still really little – if they were older (and therefore not sharing out bed quite so much!!) then I’d say a Queen is more than fine. I’d say no to the TV but yes to the iPad (with TV/movie capabilities!) and the rest…oh so much fun to dream!!

Definitely a king sized bed. Yes to TV. Also a reading corner, with a big comfy recliner/daybed (okay, now, I’m dreaming!). I like the idea of the french doors out to a little corner of garden. Hot tub would be awesome! Do it! :)

I say yes to hot tub and tv! I never thought we’d have a tv in our bedroom but it is great! We don’t watch it that much but it is excellent for sick kiddies to relax on the bed and watch quietly, children having sleepovers can watch a movie without disturbing others in the house. Our girls come into bed at 6.30am and on the weekends we put Dora on and go back to sleep while they snuggle and watch! In my dream bedroom I would also have a quiet reading nook!

Oh, to have a king sized bed! In fact, I’d just be happy with a new queen bed at this stage. We’re in desperate need of a new one!
I’m a tad boring when it comes to colours, so I tend to go with creams, whites etc… As I said… boring!
There must be so much satisfication in doing this all yourself. Good on you. x

Well I for one am a fan of tv in the bedroom, so I’d say yes lol it’s the only place i stay put and watch and not wander off and has kept me sane parenting kids to sleep.
the main thing I’d want in a bedroom apart from floor space and storage is a bath in an ensuite!

why not too all i say? It is a dream home isn’t it. having your own private space is certainly something of great importance. a place for you to take time out.

No TV! I’m trying to think through our bedroom too, although it isn’t too difficult – not much other than the bed will fit!
Jo @Countrylifeexperiment says
The only problem with the hot tub, is having to hop out at the end and sprint through the cold to get inside.
If we had a tv in the bedroom, either the Country Boy or myself would end up going in and watching tv whilst the other one watched the tv in the living room – we would literally never see each other, but it may solve a few disagreements!

We are actually doing plans for adding a master bedroom for our house at the moment. My dreams are an ensuite (we are currently a 1 bathroom house and I’m the only female) and a v serene room.
I don’t know about a hot tub, but I love those natural bathrooms that look like they are in the backyard (althougth usually they have glass walls and maybe a rock wall – so it seems like you are showering in a waterfall not a bathroom).

definitely a king if you can fit it in. we have a queen and would dearly love a king sized bed but our room just isn’t big enough.
a spa yes! nothing like a hot spa under the dark night sky with the stars twinkling above you!
we have a tv in our bedroom, we’ve tried it without and i don’t like it. as for colour – we painted our bedroom this year after spending nearly a year trying to decide on the right colour and then trying to find the right shade – it’s a lovely deep red, so cosy and inviting and sensual, so glad we decided on it.

We wanted to do a jewel purple feature wall (ending up doing it in the living room instead) and we have a dark wood four poster Queen bed from Super AMart. We recently added a corner piece of a modular black couch in the bedroom and it’s made it look cozy and inviting.
With your gorgeous French doors, I would do a pale sea green and white furnitre. And I would make the headboard by covering it with satin fabric and punching in pretty silver pins. I’m terrible at explaining, but something like this (I just googled for this image) http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/01/diy-simple-tufted-headboard/
Have fun deciding!
