Home Made Baby Toy – Bottle Top Bell

bottle top bell baby toy

Last week I rabbited on about our lovely ‘Bobo-made’ baby gym. (Bobo is what everyone, and I mean everyone, calls my Dad) Since then the Big Kids and I have been working on a special, ‘for Quatro only’ project, making our own baby gym toys!

This week we created the one of a kind, never been seen before, easy to make….
Bottle Top Bell.

To make your own you’ll need -

A handful of coloured plastic bottle tops.
A metal skewer (and a way to heat it up, carefully).
A ribbon or strong string
A bell or two (or not if you’d prefer).

Now the first part of this project needs to be done by an adult, outside, away from everyone else. Heat up the metal skewer and push it through the centre of each bottle top, melting a hole. The reason you need to be outside is so you only poison yourself with the burning plastic fumes.

Then string up your bottle tops with a bell or two in between and tie off the end with a good strong knot. Hang from your baby gym and you’re done!

You need to make sure your Bottle Top Bell is securely tied together and tied to the baby gym. This toy is just for whacking at while suspended, not for chewing on as it has small parts and a long string that might get tangled.

Our Bottle Top Bell is light enough for Quatro to swat at, it moves freely but won’t hurt if it suddenly bops anyone on the back swing. The bells make a gentle tinkle each time it gets wacked which seems to totally entrance the smallest boy.

What a wonderfully bright simple toy. I love it. Sadly I know a first time mum who would shun such a perfect toy, otherwise I would have my kids make this for her baby.

I’ve been seeing bottle top lids everywhere this week. I guess I should start saving some. That is so colorful and cute. It doesn’t even look like it’s made out of recyclables. Cute, cute baby, too!

And even though I see so many great activities using them, I am STILL throwing them away!

Looks like it would be very fun for a little one :)

To avoid the fumes could you use a hammer and nail to puncture the holes? Just a thought …
