easy art for kids - squish painting

School holidays are in full swing here at The Pickle Farm and it only took two days before they asked to ‘do something cool with the paints!’ Luckily I had just bought two big rolls of paper from Ikea and had a few fun painting ideas tucked away in the back of my mind especially for the holidays. This activity is an old one but a good one, a little messy, but lots of fun and the results are fabulous regardless of how old you are, or how much skill you have!

Squish Painting

What You Need:
squish painting

  • Paint – A selection of colours, preferably those that combine well. The paint needs to be thin but not watery, we watered down our liqutemp paints quite a bit to get the desired consistency.
  • Paper – Quite big pieces are better, and a decent quality and thickness so it doesn’t go soggy.
  • Spoons or icy-pole sticks to drop the paint onto the paper.
  • Newspaper or something to cover your work surface and a damp clothe for painty fingers, this can get messy!
  • Somewhere to dry all the creations – these will probably need to be dried flat.
  • What To Do:

Start by folding your piece of paper in half then opening it up again. This helps identify the centre of the paper and makes it easier to squish later on. Then drop blobs of painting somewhere around the middle of your paper. If you put paint to close to the edges it’ll get messy later, so try and stick roughly to the middle.

When you have as much paint as you want, carefully fold your paper in half again and begin squishing! Press and push the paint around between the folded halves of paper, spreading out the paint as much as you can.

When you are done squishing carefully open up the paper and check out your squish paint creation!

This easy art activity is lots of fun, even I made a few. We painted and squished and created till our whole living room was full of wet paintings! Now that they are dry we have some ideas for how to turn them into other cool creations, so stay tuned!

Wow great results! Yes very Rorschach (sp?). Which part of Ikea do you get your big rolls of paper from? Getting one is on my list to do because the A4 discarded engineering reports my husband brings home for us to draw/paint on are really not big enough! (or pretty enough to give to Nanna!)

They’re in the kids section with all the toys. You can also get the stand to put it on which also works as a paper cutter. Best buy ever!

I used to love doing this as a kid! I have been looking for ideas on how to make Christmas wrapping paper this year, looks like Master 5 and I have found it! Thank you :-)

We like to use the giant pieces as wrapping paper! Interested to see how you use them…

Love it! I have had lots of these on display, made by my fabulous five! We call them butterfly painting and tend to do lots at once then not so many! Might be time for a few more…
