Q-Tip Painting
Cotton bud, cottons swab, ear bud, or q-tip painting, no matter what you call it, kids LOVE this easy art activity!
As a parent and an early childhood teacher I love this activity too, because cotton bud painting is quick and easy to set up, low-mess, and it’s great for working on fine motor skills!

Q-tip painting is a fun and easy process art activity for kids of all ages. It’s great for preschoolers and older kids love it too!
Using cotton swabs to paint with is a great art activity set up at home with your kids because it’s low-mess. You only need a small amount of paint, and the tiny cotton swabs only pick up a small amount of paint so there is less drips and spills. Plus you can simply throw the cotton swabs away once you are done painting with them.
This is also a great activity to do in the classroom. It’s a great process art activity that is easy to set up for lots of kids to do at once (one packet of q-tips is enough for 20+ kids to paint with!) and it is fabulous for working on fine motor skills. You can easily combine it with other art supplies and techniques – use q-tips instead of brushes for crayon resist painting, or use it as a lesson on pointillism for older kids.
I use cotton bud painting with the preschoolers I work with as an open-ended, table top painting activity. Each child has their own try of paint and q-tips so it’s a great individual creative activity while also allowing for lots of social interaction and sharing of ideas… and it is always a huge hit!

Q-Tip Painting for Kids
Materials
- Q-tips / cotton buds / cotton swabs
- Liquid watercolors (or diluted paint of any kind)
- Paper
- Paint palette, containers, or an old ice cube tray!
We love using liquid watercolors for q-tip painting because they colors are so vibrant and the cotton swabs soak up the liquid so it’s less ‘drippy’. But this activity also works great with regular kids paint, just add lots of water and they will work great. You can also use q-tips with watercolor discs, again just add lots of water!
You can use any kind of paper you have. Use a BIG sheet of paper for younger kids so they have lots of room to experiment and explore. Try using a small piece of paper for older kids to encourage a finer, more detailed painting experience.

Instructions
Add your paint to the paint palette or container, and pop a q-tip into each colour of paint.
Cover your work surface and grab some paper and you are ready to paint!
Encourage your kids to only dip one end of the q-tip into the paint, and have some extras on hand for when someone gets mixed up and dips the wrong end!

As your child is painting you can talk about the marks they are making – are they making big lines or little lines, dots, or squiggles. You can also talk about the colours they are using, the size and shape of the paper and more!
This q-tip painting activity couldn’t be easier to do, but I guarantee your kids will love it!

I think I have some cotton buds stashed in with my scrapbooking stuff somewhere, so we might give this a try tomorrow.
Or maybe we could get around to giving our Jackson Pollock style toothbrush painting a go … finally!
Looks like I need to get some better water colours though, those paints have come up very nice!
This is my favourite way of painting (and my eldest son loves it too). I just love the look and it feels great, like writing with a really nice pen.
Kieran just painted with Q-tips (what we call them in the States) and watercolors for the first time the other day at an art fair. I never even thought of doing it at home!
Very cute pictures :)
A lovely no fuss art idea. I’m so borrowing this for school holidays. Especially as our paintbrushes have all disappeared to be used as garden decorations.
Great Idea….We will be trying this soon!
This is one of our favorite painting experiences at preschool – always a hit with the kids and it inspires lots of lovely fine brush (cotton bud) work. I love the look of concentration on your little ones face :)
Fabulous idea!! Must try this – relatively easy to contain mess too!
Great idea…I actually never used cotton buds before great idea!
Oh, Mrs Pickle, you are a mama after my own heart! We love painting with cotton buds too!
