Exploring and Creating with Coloured Glue

Exploring and Creating with Coloured Glue - an easy art activity

Sometimes art is all about getting stuff onto paper, and getting sticky and messy as you go.

That is what our art looked like this morning when I gathered the empty glue bottles, added a little PVA to each bottle (we used Micdor craft glue but you can use any white craft/school glue), a dash of water, and a few drops of food colouring and handed them over to Noah.

“Oh you made the glue all coloured!” he said as he instantly upturned a bottle and gave it a little squeeze onto the paper.

He drizzled and dribbled the coloured glue all over his page.

He squeezed hard and filled the paper with floods of colour, watching it swirl and drip as he moved the paper aside to make room for another piece.

Then he moderated his grip and gained more control over the flow so he could make lines and dots and create representations of his ideas.

It was an experiment in control, and a great work out for the small muscles in his hands, as well as his eye hand co-ordination. He played around with cause and effect, and learned how thick liquids behave, and how colours combine. But mostly it was just sticky, gluey, fun!

We usually use Elmer’s, but this is one of our favorites.

I’m pretty sure that Elmer’s glue is the same thing as what we call PVA here in Australia, or at least the white Elmer’s glue is. I can’t find anything equivalent to the clear Elmer’s glue that is often mentioned!

We have added food coloring to glue and swirled it around with toothpicks, but I haven’t added it to the bottle like this. What a fun idea!
