We call it ‘busy work’ at our house.
Busy work – a fine motor activity that keeps little hands busy and little minds engaged.
It’s one of the best ways to redirect wildness, and to focus on something a little calmer. It’s perfect for when you don’t have lots of time, or patience, or when things are going to hell in a hand-basket and you need to change the tone, fast!
Geoboards are one of our favourite ‘busy work’ activities.

How to Use Geoboards.
A traditional geoboards is made from a square board with a number of pegs arranged in a grid that you can stretch rubber bands around to make various shapes.
The most common use for a geoboard is to create different shapes with the rubber bands. By looping a rubber band around a peg then stretching it out to loop around other pegs it’s easy to make squares, triangles, rectangles and polygons. This is a great hands-on way to learn lots of mathematical concepts such as shapes, perimeter, area, angles, symmetry, patterns, fractions and more.
Geoboards are often paired with geoboard pattern cards and children can work on replicating the pattern or image on their geoboard, or creating their own pictures with the rubber bands.
Young children usually start by adding rubber bands to the geoboard and making random shapes while working fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Older children can use a geoboard to learn about shapes and simple maths concepts and even teens will love using geoboards as a fun way to visualise and learn complex concepts.
But there is more to geoboards than just maths! There are so many great ways to use a geo board to incorporate other areas of learning such as literacy, and so many ways to be creative with geoboards. And there are so many fun and interesting geo board designs too!
