Making pictures with pattern blocks is a super fun activity that is great for working on lots of math concepts, fine motor skills and more.
Pattern blocks come in standard sizes and shapes -yellow hexagons, orange squares, red trapezoids, blue parallelograms, white rhombuses, and green triangles, and can be used in lots of so many fun ways with so much potential for learning.
Pattern blocks are great for learning and reinforcing math skills, such as shape recognition, symmetry, area and beginning geometry. They are also perfect for working on fine motor skills and eye hand co-ordination. Rotating and flipping the blocks to make them fit is great for working on visual discrimination and spatial reasoning. And they are a fun problem solving and creative thinking activity too!
There are so many great ways to use pattern blocks with kids of all ages!
Turkey Pattern Block Mats
These turkey pattern block templates make a great Thanksgiving activity or would be a fun addition to a farm learning theme.
Using these turkey pattern block designs is easy – just print out the pattern block mats (scroll down for the printable links below) and grab a set of pattern blocks and you are ready to play.
This set of wooden pattern blocks from Melissa and Doug is great for at home, and this big container of pattern blocks is perfect for the classroom.
These magnetic pattern blocks are also a great option, and perfect for young children as the blocks don’t move around as easily. You can put the printable pattern block templates over the magnetic base and then build on top.
Using the Turkey Pattern Block Mats with Preschoolers
For preschoolers and young children who are just starting with pattern blocks, choose the coloured pattern block mats.
These pattern block mats print to scale (see the printing instructions) so children can place the correct pattern block directly onto the mat, copying the design to make the picture.
You can extend the learning by naming the colours and shapes of each block, and using positional language to talk about how you ‘flip’ ‘rotate’ and ‘turn’ the blocks to make them fit.
You can also encourage your child to count the number of blocks they used to make the turkey, and count how many of each colour/shape they used as well.
Using the Pattern Block Turkey Designs with Older Children.
Use these turkey pattern block printables with kindergarten and older children as a fun, hands-on maths activity. Depending on their level, older kids can use the coloured pattern block mats, or the outline pattern blocks for an extra challenge.
The outline pattern block mats print to scale (see below for printing instructions) so you can build the pictures directly onto the mat, but they require a little extra thinking to decide which block fits the shape without the colours to prompt you. This extra challenge is great for working on spatial awareness.
Older children will be able to identify the colour of each block, name the shapes, and count the number of each shape they used to make the turkey. They will also love the challenge of coming up with their own turkey pattern block designs to make and share, and could also work on other Thanksgiving pattern block pictures.

Instructions for Printing Pattern Block Mats
These printable pattern block mats are all A4 sized pdf files, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open them. They will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper.
Please choose ‘Actual Size’ from your printer settings. Do not select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer settings regardless of what size paper you are using. If you get a message saying ‘image is larger than the paper’s printable area’ you can safely ignore this so that the pattern block mats print at the correct size.
