Printable Autumn Leaf Puppets and a Song

Posted on May 17, 2012 9 Comments

We’ve gone a little autumn leaf mad! If you’d like to join us in celebrating Autumn (or fall) with a song, download our free printable autumn leaf puppets.

I thought I knew all the best preschool songs, but one autumn my kids cam home singing an autumn leaf song I didn’t know! Over the years all vour of my kids learned the same song at our lovely local kinder (preschool) and they have all loved it so much that they sang it over and over and over until I learned it too!

The Five Golden Autumn Leaves song is now a favourite, so I made some printable autumn leaf puppets to go with it!

Five Gold Autumn Leaves Song

Do you know the Five Golden Autumn Leaves song? You can sing it with the word ‘autumn’ or ‘fall’ whichever you prefer.

Here are the words, and the actions to go with it.

Five Gold Autumn Leaves.

Five golden autumn leaves,
High up in a tree.
(hold your leaves up high)
The wind blows…
(blow on your leaves)
The leaves shake…
(shake your leaves)
And one falls down to me.
(make one leaf fall down)
Falling, falling,
Falling down,
Falling, falling,
Falling to the ground
(repeat until all the leaves have fallen)

We’ve shared a quick family video of my (then) preschooler and I singing the song and using the puppets to help you learn the song (the words are included in the printable). Excuse the bad video and my terrible singing, but as I’ve said over and over, your kids don’t care how bad your singing is, as long as you sing, so I am hoping the internets won’t care too much either!

Make the Autumn Leaf Puppets

To make the autumn leaf puppets you’ll need:

  • free printable (download below)
  • printer paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • Laminator or self adhesive paper optional

Start by printing and cutting around each leaf, you can laminate the leaves or cover them in self adhesive contact paper if you like to help them last longer. Then cut out the ‘finger straps’ and make a loop with each one, big enough to slide your finger into. Tape the looped finger straps to the back of each leaf. Put the loops towards the bottom of each leaf so it sits nicely on your finger.

There are five golden autumn leaf puppets in this set, each with a ‘finger strap’, plus printable song words in both an ‘autumn’ and a ‘fall’ version.

This printable is an A4 sized pdf file, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open it. If you are printing on US ‘letter sized’ paper be sure to select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer options.

Sweet autumn song and activity Kate, thanks for sharing. You have a lovely voice, don’t be so harsh on yourself! My daughter just sang a lovely song about autumn but I’m not sure if she just made it up (my children have been practising playing singing on The Voice so making up songs is pretty popular in our house right now!!!)
We’ve made your 5 little ducks puppets, which I’ve included in our quiet time book along with the words to the song. (Actually they aren’t so much puppets as I didn’t include sticks. I just laminated them and added velcro on the back so they can go on and off the book).

This is really lovely. We don’t experience the gorgeous changes in leaf colours over here in WA :( We created a lovely sandcastle song and items out of felt for summer. Probably have to think of something for winter now!

That’s great. Going to try it out! I don’t know a song but each autumn, we collect leaves and make a craft inspired by it whether it’s gluing it, using it as a stencil or painting. We marry our craft with a poem I found on the net- autumn leaves are falling down. Red and yellow, orange and brown. Whirling, twirling, round and round, falling softly to the ground. It’s easy to make up actions and I like the lyrics of the simple poem.

Great printables and song thanks Kate. Little eco and I printed them out last night and we sang the song over-and-over again. She loved it. And it seems you’re a better singer than me ;-) Little eco kept on telling me to shush every time I tried to sing. She wouldn’t have a bar of us doing the song without your video.

Just wanted to let you know that my daughter and I had a fun afternoon today with this activity. Thank you so much for sharing your activities! We recently moved to a country with changing seasons and this is the first time we are experiencing autumn! Love this season’s colours :)

Another great song and puppet activity that I am looking forward to sharing with my 3yr. old preschool class this fall. We live in California and the tree outside our classroom has beautiful leaves in October. We will go on a nature walk and do some collecting first. Thanks

Five little leaves so bright and gay,
Were dancing about on a tree one day,
The wind came blowing through the town,
    (Blow blow )
And one little leaf came tumbling down.

I stick some real or painted leaves on a painted tree with bluetack and then let them take turns pulling a leaf off
