Roll the dice and build a shape out of pattern blocks!
This free printable roll and build pattern block activity is a great ‘print and go’ activity that kids will love.
It’s a quick and easy way for kids to work on number skills, shapes, spatial awareness, fine motor skills and more!

Playing with pattern blocks is great for building fine motor skills and working on eye-hand co-ordination. They also offer lots of ways to work on visual discrimination, spatial reasoning and problem solving, as well as lots of math skills such as shape recognition and beginning geometry skills.
There are so many great ways to play with pattern blocks, and this roll and build a shape activity is a fun way to add in some extra number learning opportunities too!

Roll and Build a Shape Pattern Block Activity
To play this fun roll and build activity you’ll need the following:
- A set of pattern blocks – we have this set from Melissa and Doug at home, and this big container of pattern blocks for the classroom.
- A dice
- The free printable roll and build game sheet (print below)
You might like to laminate the roll and build page so it can be used over and over.
To play the game simply roll the dice and add the shape that is shown for that number. Keep rolling the dice and adding pattern blocks until you have built a big shape on the page.
Kids can make an abstract shape or try creating a picture with the shape they roll!
To extend the activity you could ask the child to count the number of shapes they used, count each different shape, or count the number of sides the shape they created has.

There is a colour and a black and white version included.
This printable is an A4 sized pdf file, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open it. It will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper, just be sure to select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer options to allow for printer margins.
