Sew Sew

Posted on January 27, 2010 10 Comments

I’ve been sewing pants for my small boy.

Having a toilet learning boy in the house we are going through a fair few pairs of pants, and we don’t have that many that are easy for him to get on and off, so it was time to take action.

I haven’t actually sewn anything other than over locking a few wipes/face washers for a very very long time, let alone coming up with some kind of pattern, but I figured even if they turned out terrible Muski would still wear them and wee in them. So I grabbed a pair of his PJ pants and some newspaper and made a very rough pattern, then I went in search of some material. In the end I dug out a rainbow coloured flannel baby blanket that I’d set aside to give away… perfect.

A little while later he had his new pants on! Success!

And of course success went to my head. I altered the pattern a little (it was too wide in the top and crotch, but it’s still not quite right) and dug out a smallish piece of my favourite fabric to make a second pair. These ones aren’t quite long enough in the rise because I didn’t have enough fabric but oh how I love them… and lots of people have asked where we got them which makes me feel extra proud.

I’m on a roll now, I am going to make him more pants. They are super quick and easy and I am determined to perfect the pattern…. but the problem is finding decent fabric. Neither of the two big fabric chains here seem to have anything decent for boys. They have lots of camouflage prints (totally not me) or stupid cartoons of trucks or guns, or spider man prints, and there is hundreds of rolls of florals and pink checks and other girly girl fabrics…. but what I really want is some interesting patterns that would suit a boy. Do you think I can find any?? nope.

I couldn’t even find any fabric I liked, so my crazy idea to make myself some maternity pants is on the back burner too.

Perhaps my search for fabric has to head online. I’ve never book marked any of the fabric sites I’ve come across for fear of spending money I don’t have on fabric I don’t need…. but now I have a need… maybe I can splurge? A little?

Who wants to enable me and point me towards fabric sites, especially those with interesting boy fabric options!?!?

Those pants are AWESOME!!! I bought a new overlocker recently but haven’t used it since I broke a threat and couldn’t figure out how to re-thread it!!!
    I am inspired now though.

We got some awesome pants for Heidi on Etsy, they were made from an old chenille bedspread. Ditch the fabric stores and hit the op shops and check out their second hand bedding.

    Very noice.

I think I have a great (proper) pattern ( that belongs to Tiff ) … maybe she’d let me send it to you if I find it again (or maybe I sent it back …I had it right there)

I never made any because like you I couldn’t find fabric …then I sort of forgot ;)

AWESOME PANTS!!! Ok, now am very inspired. Favourite online fabric place has to be superbuzzy.com but have never actually ordered from them… also a lot of girly stuff but some cool quirky fabrics too. If you go to soulemama and do a blog search on fabric she has lots and lots of cool (boy-friendly) online fabric places… all US though. Have you had a look at http://www.ijustlovethatfabric.com.au? xxx
