Things You Should Know about Pickles.
Lately I’ve been getting a few comments, tweets and emails that lead me to believe that some people may be a little confused about the whole ‘pickle’ thing. I’d hate for people to feel like they have been mislead, so tonight, I’m going to set the record straight.
Here are some things you should know about pickles and me…
My last name is not Pickle.
Yes I know my twitter handle is katepickle (someone else registered picklebums first, and they don’t even use it) and I’m katepickle on pinterest, and on instagram too, but my surname is Fairlie… boring I know.
We don’t grow pickles on The Pickle Farm.
We do grow the occasional cucumber, and every now and then we even make our own pickles, but mostly all we grow are 6 foot thistles and children. I’m not sure you can even call ten acres a ‘farm’… but we do it anyway. It’s called ‘The Pickle Farm’ because it’s where the picklebums are. See, makes total sense!
Picklebums are not rude.
Well they could be if you have a dirty mind, but really, it all started as innocent fun. Just a silly name we call our kids, and you know, when you start a blog you should go with the silliest name possible right?
Pickles are YUM!
Lucky for me and my silly blog name, everyone in our family likes pickles. Actually they LOVE pickles. They love dill pickles, and pickle relish and just pickles in general, but even the smell of them made my hurl when I was pregnant.
So I hope that has cleared up some of the confusion. Maybe one day we’ll dabble in commercial pickle growing and I might even consider changing my name to Pickle…. but probably not!

I wondered about the pickles – now I know too.
when I saw the picture of the jar of pickles at the top of your post it reminded me of what we call them … bum hummers … LOL
bum hummers? Cause they make you fart??
I guess there is too much general farting in this house to notice if it increased when pickles are consumed LOL
Yep that’s it!!!
It’s a great name for a blog! I love pickles too. Here’s our favorite dip, made with pickles! (get’s requested every gathering)
One 300 ml tub sour cream
aprox. 1/2 jar of Masterfoods gerkin relish, to taste (not plugging Masterfoods, it’s about the only gerkin relish I’ve found :)
Mix. Dip crackers, corn chips, crudites.
Pretty simple. :)
oh that sounds delsih! Thanks for sharing!
It is actually super easy to grow pickles and make them … especially the malossol style !
Compost, any container, seeds forget them and harvest when you feel like it (I usuaaly forgt for a very long time …hrnce the malossol size)…in a jar with a magic mixture (kids will love inventing that…) and you are done
in the past few years it’s been too dry to grow cucumbers here… well actually it’s just that I’ve forgotten to give the damn things enough water so we’ve only gotten like one on the whole vine! But I’ll try again… eventually!
Picklebums is such a cool name for a blog!
I had no idea there was such confusion out there. ;)
I had no idea either… till I found a link to my site that said “their last name is Pickle and they live on a Pickle Far, how cool!”… then I felt bad! LOL
LOL
I love pickles, too, and I did wonder about the Picklebums ;)
Hilarious! I’d never thought to be confused about it but fair enough, I can see that some people would be looking for the pickle link. With my blog I would love to go back in time and take Ballerina out of the title too – I’m way too attached to it now but I do get a lot of traffic from people looking for ballerina-related stuff (including hairy ballerinas, for some reason!) and they are no doubt rather disappointed to discover it’s a travel blog with no mention of dancing at all.
I have to confess that I was a tad confused about the ballerina in the title too… but I am not so worried about what the blog is called, as I am about what’s in it. Ballerinas or not, I love reading about your travels!
Thanks Kate! Yes I don’t blame you at all for being confused, and if I’d known what I know about blogging now some 6 years ago there would be no ballerinas there … oh well!
Pickles are yummy :D Pity they gross the rest of my family out.
