This Week
We didn’t mean to plant so many sunflowers… it just sort of happened.
We didn’t think the old seeds would grow, but we chucked them into the empty bit of dirt anyway, just in case.
Now we have a LOT of sunflowers!
They are buzzing with bees and literally dripping with nectar, and the local cockatoos visit every morning looking for a feast.
We’ve been covering the biggest of them with plastic bags to deter the cockies but we can’t cover them all. I often rush outside when I hear the screech of the cockies and run around clapping and shouting like a mad woman trying to scare them away. I am not sure why I bother as I am sure they are just waiting for the day when all of the flower heads ripen, and I am not here, and then they will descend and eat the lot!
Still, I have to try because we have plans for roasted sunflower seeds, and sunflower butter, and supplemental feed for the chooks… which may all be pipe dreams, but for now I’ll let the happy faces of the sunflowers encourage me to be optimistic.
When I’m not chasing the cockies from the sunflowers, here are some other things I’ve been checking out this week….

I have sunflower seeds to plant – is it too late ?
It is too late for us coldies down south, but you might have enough weeks of hot weather left to get some flowers. They like a long hot summer!
How very special! Sunflowers always make me smile!
What gorgeous sunflowers! What joy they would bring. :)
They are FABULOUS. I am going to plant some this year… send seeds!
