For Preschoolers
For preschoolers and children who are just beginning with pattern blocks, the coloured pattern block templates are the best to start with.
These pattern block mats print to scale (see the printing instructions) so you can place the correct block directly onto the mat, copying the design to make the picture.
For Older Kids
Depending on their level and experience, older kids will love the extra challenge of the outline only pattern block mats, but they’ll love the colored mats too!
The outline pattern block mats print to scale (see below for printing instructions) so you can build directly onto the mat, but they require a little extra thinking to decide which block fits the shape without the colours to help.

Tips and Extension Ideas
- Notice and name the colours of each pattern block, explain that each type of shape is the same colour.
- Notice and name the shapes of the pattern blocks. For older kids you can also count the sides and corners (edges and vertices) of each shape.
- Show beginners how to flip and rotate the pattern blocks to fit.
- Count the number of each shape used to create each picture.
- Encourage your kids to come up with new ways to make hearts from the pattern blocks, or make their own pattern block designs.

Instructions for Printing Pattern Block Mats
These printable pattern block mats are all A4 sized pdf files, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open them. They will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper.
Please choose ‘Actual Size’ from your printer settings. Do not select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer settings regardless of what size paper you are using. If you get a message saying ‘image is larger than the paper’s printable area’ you can safely ignore this so that the pattern block mats print at the correct size.
