Picture Frame Drawing Prompts – Free Printable
Sometimes a sheet of blank paper can be a bit daunting, these free printable picture frame drawing prompts are a fun start to drawing for kids of all ages.
If you’ve got kids who need a bit of encouragement to draw, or perhaps they like drawing but they’d love a new, fun, drawing activity, these empty frame drawing prompts are the perfect activity.
Drawing is a great activity for working on fine motor control and all those other pre-writing skills, as well as a simple way to be creative, but sometimes you need a little something special to help get you started.
A blank sheet of paper can be overwhelming for some kids, so offering a starting point, like these frames, is an easy way to encourage them. Plus, drawing your picture into a fancy frame is just plain fun!

We first tried this fun drawing activity way back when my kids were all little (this post is updated from the original published in September 2012), and we’ve done it so many times over the years with so many different kids of different ages, and each time it is a hit.
Sometimes I simply draw a set of frames onto a large bit of paper and let everyone get to work creating (tip – this is a great group activity for a birthday party!), and other times I’ve drawn individual frames on paper for each child to you. But to make this activity really quick and easy I’ve created this set of printable picture frame drawing prompts, so all you need to do is print and go!
These printable picture frame drawing prompts are a quick and easy, no-prep, art activity that is perfect for kids of all ages. They work great if you have a group of kids of varying ages as even preschoolerss are easily able to fill the frames (no frustrating lines to colour within for little hands!). Bigger kids can really flex their creative muscles, and adults will have fun with this easy drawing activity too!
They make a great ‘early finishers’ activity for your class, and they’d make a fabulous art display up on the wall. Use them for creating self portraits for an ‘all about me’ theme, or make a gallery wall full of fancy framed images.
They are also a great activity for keeping kids busy while travelling or in waiting rooms. You could laminate a few pages or use dry erase pockets and dry erase pens or chalk marker pens so you can reuse the frames over and over.
These frames are ideal for drawing with pencils or markers, but you could also mix it up and create with collage, or use watercolors, pastels or any art supplies you can think of.

Fantastic – thanks Kate. Wish I’d logged on hours ago – my sick 6 yr old would have loved to do this! The download process was easy peasy. Not as fast as for Vicki but I’m using a non-standard OS.
Thank you, these are pretty cool and are now being used to bribe my 8 yr old boy into being creative – instead of moaning about how hard drawing/colouring/anything creative is… He is now too busy creating :)
Thank you Kate, these are lovely. We love drawing here too so they will be well received in our house. My youngest has already used some for watercolour painting this morning (she’s been housebound with pneumonia so really enjoyed doing something new). May I ask what program you use to make printables like these?
Another great printable to add to your list Kate. I’ll be printing these for Miss Poss tomorrow.
This is awesome! I was thinking about opening a family unit for my daughter’s homeschool preschool and having her draw a picture of what she thinks her family looks like. She is very into arts & crafts, but she is only 3.5 years old, so I’m sure it will look more like scribbles than anything else, lol!
