Building with blocks or playing with a simple construction set is a great activity for young children, and you can add some extra language learning to a building activity by singing one of these fun building songs for preschoolers and toddlers!
Very young children love watching you build a tower of blocks as you sing a fun building song, and, of course, once the tower is built they can knock it down and you can build and sing all over again.
Preschoolers and older children will love building their own towers and joining in the song, and it’s such a fun and simple way to encourage language development.

The Best Building Songs for Preschoolers
These are our favourite building songs. They are short, and easy to sing, or say, so you don’t need to worry about how wonderful a singer you are. Sing them as you are building with blocks or any time.
Build It Up
This is a simple building song that kids will pick up quickly and can easily join in with. It’s perfect for building big tall block towers!
Build it up,
Build it up,
Build it higher.
Build it up, up, up,
into the sky.
Build it up
Build it up
Build it higher…
Build it up, up, up
into the sky!
Here’s a House
This song has actions that go with it, but you can turn those hand actions into actual building. Build the walls and floor and roof as you sing, then knock it down at the end!
Here’s a house with a wall, with a wall, with a wall.
(put arms up as a wall)
Here’s a house with a floor, with a floor, with a floor.
(lay arms flat like a floor)
Here’s a house with a roof, with a roof, with a rooooooooooof…
(build a roof with your arms then wobble it about)
CRASH!
(crash arms into lap)
There’s no house any more, any more.
(clapping)
There’s no house any more!
Cranes
This is a fun song to sing while you pretend to be a crane and haul up another block to add to the top of the construction!
Cranes reach up!
(reach up with your arm)
Cranes reach down!
(reach down)
Cranes reach out,
(reach out)
And all around!
(wave your arm around.)
London Bridge
This is another fun song that involves your construction falling down. We like to crash down our bridge construction at the end of the first verse and then build it up again.
We’ve changed the words slightly from the traditional version, and you can change them even more to suit your situation.
You can change the words ‘London Bridge’ to the name of any bridge. It’s fun to name the bridge after your child, or someone you know. You can also change the words ‘my fair lady’ to the name of your child, or someone else, try singing ‘my fair mummy’! And lastly think of what else you could build the bridge with and add another verse. My kids think it is hilarious when I suggest to build it up with ‘bread and jam’ or ‘jelly and ice cream’!
London Bridge is falling down,
Falling down, falling down.
London bridge is falling down,
My fair lady.
Build it up with wooden blocks,
Wooden blocks, wooden blocks.
Build it up with wooden blocks,
My fair lady
Wooden blocks will bend and break
Bend and break, bend and break
Wooden blocks will bend and break
My fair lady

Singing and music is such a great educational activity for kids, and you don’t have to be a musician or a perfect singer to include lots of music in your day!
Try one of these easy music and singing ideas with your kids.
I think we have these songs on a Play School dvd :)
Princess is also loving building at the moment. She keeps wanting to build a library with her wooden blocks :)
My sons love building. Although I think that with a 21 mth old ‘Crash it down’ is definitely the tune of the moment.
My girls are still bigger fans of the crash it down part than the build it up part. Crashing it down it is so much fun
We sing those songs while playing with duple too!
I’ve been a pre-school educator for 25 plus years. Definately the crashing is the most fun. Legos and dulpos are the favorites in block center.
We sing those songs too :)
