Word Drawing

Posted on June 17, 2015 6 Comments

It started out as an easy name activity to keep the four year old entertained and not ‘ruining the big kid’s lives’, but after a few minutes the seven year old asked to join in and within half an hour all four kids were involved and the table was covered with word drawings.

Word Drawing - an easy art and literacy activity for kids

All you need for this easy art activity is paper and markers.

That’s it.

A thick black marker for writing the words is handy, or you can print them like we did using a nice printed font.

We started out by turning our names into pictures.

I asked my kids if they could turn each letter of their name into something about them and it was fun to see each letter turn into favourite things and even self portraits.

That was were my plans ended, but the kids had other ideas.

They didn’t want to stop at just names and they asked for more words to turn into drawings. Soon we were printing out all kinds of words including titles of favourite books!

This was a super easy, super quick, no mess activity with lots of creativity and good dose of name and letter recognition for the small one and spelling and typing practice for the bigger kids.

It just goes to show you that simple and easy ideas often are the best!

That is a great idea! I know it’s a year later, but what font did you use? I’m looking for a font with the simple lower-case A and the angled M, but I can’t find one.

    Thanks!

I actually can’t remember which font we used for this activity… but wrote a list of good free fonts to use with kids so that might help you find something – https://picklebums.com/fonts-for-beginning-writers/
