Halloween is becoming a much bigger celebration here in Australia than it was when I was a child. My kids love spooky, scary, stuff, and Halloween is right up their alley.

We’d totally be all in for Halloween, except that we live in the middle of no where and that makes trick or treating difficult and stressful, and I don’t want my kids filling up on buckets of sweet stuff anyway. But I always feel guilty that we never end up doing anything for Halloween, even though I know my kids would love it.

So this year I am planning a little trick, and a few treats of my own, and creating some stress-free and guilt-free Halloween fun.

I’m putting together a Halloween Hunt!

Ok so a Halloween hunt is not quite the same as going trick or treating, but it is loads of fun and it would be a great Halloween party activity.

I still feel a little guilty that we don’t do real trick or treating, but at least I don’t have to feel guilty about all the sweet treats rotting their teeth because I’ve finally got my reluctant six year old to use an electric tooth brush!

We’ve been trying out the new Phillips SoniCare toothbrush for kids and my once reluctant tooth brusher is finally giving the electric toothbrush a try.

The sonicare toothbrushes for kids have these cool sticker bits so the kids can personalise their own brush and there is no more arguing about whose is whose. It slowly increases the brushing time over 90 days so you can easily build up to the ‘dentist-recommended’ 2 minutes of brushing, and it makes funky sounds to tell the kids how long they’ve been brushing for.

But the feature I like best is that the whole thing sits level on the counter so the kids can wrangle the toothpaste on to the brush with two hands. I am hopeful this might reduce the amount of toothpaste that ends up on my mirror, on the floor, on the toilet! (please tell me my kids are not the only ones who manage to get toothpaste in the weirdest places!)

  1. A halloween hunt will be so much fun. We aren’t doing Halloween this year, kids have sport practise on Monday afternoon till late. Bugger :P I do like the toothbrushes that signal to the kids that 2 minutes is up, helps them know how long to brush for!

    1. It’s such a busy time of year here in Australia isn’t it!
I’m shifting Halloween to Saturday this year because we can’t fit it around school and dancing on Monday! LOL

  2. I love this idea of a Halloween hunt. We moved to a street with less kids and I felt guilty about no trick or treat. I think my little guy would love an electric toothbrush too, finally he is cleaning his teeth every night.

  3. Such a great idea! We only just jumped on the Halloween bandwagon last year and it was so much fun! We’re not into the whole trick or treat scene but dressing up and having a Halloween party with friends was a highlight of the year! Joce xx

  4. Oooh, your hunt sounds like fun! And I like the sound of a customisable toothbrush – that would interest my kids for sure! I love the idea of the timer too – sometimes I catch my kids doing 5 second brushes, and that’s not going to cut it once their adult teeth come through!
