We only have a family dessert every now and then, but when we do, you don’t have to have eat all your dinner to get some.
Yep, you can avoid carrots like the plague, you can eat nothing but peas and mint sauce, you can never let that combination of chicken and rice past your lips and you will still be offered dessert.
As long as you are polite about the food that is served, as long as you express your likes and dislikes in a respectful manner, as long as you strive to have a positive attitude about food and meal times, you can eat nothing but air, and you’ll still be offered dessert.
We try not to attach bribery, rewards, ‘goodness’, or ‘badness’ to our food, and that goes for dessert too.
Some of our family desserts are more wholesome and healthy than others, but regardless of what it is, at our house dessert is not a reward for eating something else, dessert is simply a little something extra, that we occasionally have after the main meal.
Usually dessert happens when someone gets the urge to cook something a bit special, but all of our favourite desserts are simple, family friendly recipes, many of them my big kids can cook on their own and often do.

I love your attitude to this Kate! I try to do the same. Actually we virtually never have dessert after a meal at home but that’s mostly because I’m too lazy to make one – but we might have a special morning or afternoon tea treat on a weekend just because.

We use the term “dessert eligible” in our house to make sure that the dinner is completed before enjoying a nice treat.
