When you stuff four kids and two adults into a car for hours on end, you need a few distractions to stop you all losing your minds. These road trip drawing prompts will help with that!
When we go on long car trips we usually pack a few small toys (dino crayons like the ones in the photo above double as toys and crayons!), some books, stickers, pens and pencils along with the kids’ journals and some drawing activities.
We do take screens and devices, we love to play car games for road trips, and we love audio books too, but for long trips the kids need a variety of activities to keep them engaged, so having a stash of ‘car friendly’ activities will make the road trip a lot less stressful for everyone.
For a recent long trip I made up these new cars and roads drawing prompts that are perfect for a road trip, or any time!

Drawing prompts are a great way to encourage reluctant drawers. They give a starting point to spark the imagination, but still allow for lots of free thinking and creativity.
There is no right or wrong ways to draw with these prompts. If your child wants to draw a herd of purple elephants coming down the road, or a sign that says ‘no parents allowed’ that’s awesome! Just let them enjoy the process.
All of these finish the picture printables have an open-ended suggestion at the top of the page, but you could also extend your child’s thinking by asking your own questions.
Does the road end at a castle? Or maybe it goes to the beach?
What will your speed sign say? What new sign could you create?
Are there boxes of chocolates in the back of the truck? Or maybe a zoo animal??
Is there a car coming down the road? Or perhaps there is a group of monkeys riding bikes?
